i moved to foobar to get away from all the bells and whistles that were coming to winamp. i like my player to be simple and not hog resources, so not really interested in these new mods of it.

when minimized it takes 2 megs, how is that bloated?

I used to be a Winamp user as well. I installed foobar once, never looked back. The preformance use, the tabbed playlists, facet selection... I love it all.

I'm not really using graphical add-ons as well because I love it light weight. But there are some amazing plugins available. Like the plugin to tag an album in a few clicks based on discogs data. I've wanted something like that for ages and the plugin works exactly like I want it to. Even gets album art.

You can probably tell what player I used before moving onto Foobar:

Took me ages to make it not look like horrendous default look though.....

yeah i like foobar, after being recommended it on a thread here

its lightweight, so it doesnt take ages to start up. click on a file and it plays it, no messing around

also like that the media library can display my music based on the existing folder heirarchy, and the scratchpad for re-arranging the layout

and its simple enough for my gf to be able to find the music she wants from the library too

If you have winamp installed, the 'play and enqueue in foobar' shell menu gets itself in a tizzy. Here's the fix:

copy the following into a text file and name it "foobar-context.reg" then run the .reg file to regain the functionality.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\foobar2000.play]
@="Play in foobar2000"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\foobar2000.play\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\foobar2000\\foobar2000.exe\" \"%1\""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\foobar2000.enqueue]
@="Enqueue in foobar2000"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\foobar2000.enqueue\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\foobar2000\\foobar2000.exe\" /add \"%1\""

Guest Tamas

I still use Winamp, I have version 2.91, works great. I guess the 10MB RAM usage isn't as good as this program, but I've been using the program for over 10 years now, and when I want to listen to an MP3 I usually don't need the RAM anyway.

The only shitty thing about it is that it stutters when you try to play high resolution WAV files, but I usually just play it in Cool Edit Pro if I need to.

wow that really did something NOT cool

i install foobar2k and associate file types with it, mp3 (top file) and flac (other files) have different icon now

this means i cant select both mp3 and flac and click "play" in foobar 2k

i reset defaults to winamp and its doing it there now too

I have no idea why that should be doing that, that's the exact registry patch I used on my machine (also running both Winamp and Foobar), and when I right click on ANY number of different file types and click Play in Foobar, it happily goes on it's way and plays it.

Dang, well if you go into Regedit, you can just delete the [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\foobar2000.enqueue] and [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\foobar2000.play] trees then and it'll put it back to what it was.

Edit: Wait, are you just saying they have different icons ...What happens when you multiple select files and right click, is there no play in foobar option ?

I switched from iTunes to Foobar2000 a number of months ago. Best computer related decision I've made in a long time. I have some very basic customization implemented. I don't really know how to do a whole lot with it yet, but it's just a matter of taking the time to figure it out.

Use it, love it.

Shame this isn't available on more platforms. It's the one tool I miss most of all in GNU/Linux. MPD is sweet but it's no foobar2000.

To burn CDs put this component in your components folder:

http://www.foobar2000.com/components/foo_burninate.zip

"This component requires Nero to be installed on your system."

Right click the playlist you want and find Write Audio CD, which may be under a sub-menu. And there you are.
