It's been almost 4 years since the release of Deaf Center's hugely acclaimed "Pale Ravine" album, surely one of the definitive Modern Classical/Widescreen releases of the last few years. Since then the band (made up of Norway's Erik Skodvin and Otto Totland) have been taking their time getting the follow-up together while Skodvin has released much sought-after material under the Svarte Greiner moniker for the Type and A Room Forever imprints. This precious 7" has been in the making for a while (in fact we can't quite believe it's finally here) - pressed up in a limited run of 400 copies for the world that will no doubt barely touch the sides - demand for anything remotely associated with Deaf Center is crazy, as so many of you will no doubt already know. The material itself is overwhelming, the title track sounding like Bernard Herrmann's classic soundtrack to Taxi Driver, stripped and enriched with layered elements that at turns remind us of Angelo Badalementi, Arvo Part, Ry Cooder, and Alberto Iglesias - and it's just one of the most arresting and beautiful things you'll hear this year. Over to the flipside, and there are two further tracks of dense bliss, the first "Ashes" layers strings to form a harrowing mass of cathartic tension, while "Close" introduces a shimmering, evocative piano trail to nudge your vision out of focus and send you into a daydream retreat. It's epic, utterly beautiful material and, no doubt, one of the most collectable and precious releases of the year. Essential Purchase - this isn't a release you want to miss out on!

I'm drinking tea and eating biscuits, while listening to this EP at 1:42 AM and this is really brilliant. Thanks for the heads up Enter a new display name.

it's pretty darn nice. it's not quite as awesome as Machinefabriek in my opinion though, mainly I guess due to the short track duration. it doesn't quite evolve as far as I feel it could do.

Machinefabriek had a gig near my place, but I was a cunt and missed it....

It was not really about his music though, he did the backgroundmusic/noise for a Frisian poet that was reciting poems.

i heart all three tracks ... i wish they'd stop the solo stuff and do another album already

Judging by the samples I heard, Svarte Greiner's Knive doesn't sound as good as Pale Ravine. It's just ambient musique concrète and wooden beats...

Was it a live version of this: http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=96416

If so then you missed a right treat, as the track is beautiful.

Great stuff. I'm also hoping for a new album. I attended a Svarte Greiner-concert a month ago, and I really wish Deaf Center/Svarte Greiner could record and release more of their concerts, or maybe just put them out for us to dl.

How did he play live?

He used a laptop, microphone, guitar and a violin bow if I remember correctly. Nice, scary atmosphere. Like the soundtrack of an old horror-movie. My guess is that the stuff he does live as Svarte Greiner is improvised, so if he could record it and make it available for download, I could have a new soundtarck every now and then. I just sent him a PM on a norwegian messageboard, and asked if he has plans for any new Deaf Center-album. I'll keep you informed if I get any answer.

Just listened to "The Black Dress". Fantastic track.

The live set he links to in one of his myspace blogs is quite nice.

I've never heard Deaf Center before but while browsing Boomkat's sale section this afternoon to justify the 1 CD I had already purchased (BCD-2) I decided to take a chance on Deaf Centre 'Pale Ravine' and Helios 'Eingya' - basically they were both cheap and I liked the description plus info on Discogs. I see this is still available, will I regret not adding this now while I still can?!

£3.95 is a great offer. Both for Deaf Center and Svarte Greiner.

BTW. Got an answer from Svarte Greiner, and he is releasing a cassette called "Penpals Forever" on Digitalis, and a 3" on a dutch label called Drawswords. A new album called "Kappe" ("Cloak") in january. He didn't say anything about a new Deaf Center-album, though.
