Exponential Automation

so im sitting in ableton live right, and i wanna automate the dry/wet of an effect, with an exponenital line, instead of just a straight line, or a bunch of straight lines.

does anyone know if this can be done in live, and if not, know of any programs that can do such a thing?

i used to use fruity loops 4, and don't remember ever having the ability to create exponential lines of automation. have they updated the automation possibilities in the more recent versions or am i crazy?

i only use cubase/cakewalk/ableton sometimes, and this is easy as drawing it on.

Might just be easiest to record the automation live via midi controller and then go back and make tiny edits.

well i've never gone beyond fruity loops 4 so... you can. draw with right-click or select the tool. i think it might be different in later versions. has to be drawn though, rather than bending a line.

logic has them, and they are very easy to use.

non issue. if it doesn't have them you can approximate by adding a bunch of points..

indeed. that's what the automation is gonna do with a "real" curve anyhow (though there may be as many points as frames!)

im gonna try logic...sighs* all for curvy automation lines. the million tiny little lines thing is dumb and i won't stand for it. the idea is dumb i mean, not the person who had the idea.

as the for the drawing tools, you'll ever get a nice good curve that mathematically perfect.

there's gotta be a vst that does this....

Logic is great for drawing in Automation. One thing I'd really love to see, though, is the ability to save preset automation shapes, kind of like making a dummy clip in Live. It would save a lot of time drawing gestures you use over and over again. Also, I like Absynth's option to sync the automation with the tempo. Come to think of it, Absynth has a pretty unique set of options for drawing lines.

A 'randomize automation' feature would be nice, as well. You would simply highlight the time frame you want it to happen, how many points it should utilize, and how wide the dispersal will be.

What are some automation features you guys would love to see implemented in your DAW of choice?

There are a lot of things I'm surprised aren't in Ableton Live, besides smoothed curves, but most has to do with automation. For example, I hate how most automation lines are at full by default, so if you want to go up and down you have to edit it first before you set the main variable in the synth.

Also, device parameter part, I just don't understand why you can't edit each number by typing in a number, with VSTs that use hz and no tempo sync it's always so annoying to try and get the right number with the stupid slider...

Ahh well, I guess it's good that they don't make it too simple for people, otherwise there'd be a lot more garbage electronic music out there than there already is....

good point! absynth's envelopes would be the ideal automation, definitely... especially the ability to change the length of a sequence as a whole, in one go.

it also lets you type in the values for curves and everything else, for the mathematical perfection everyone here is against

you people have no funk!

That's pretty arse if it hasn't got that option. Even Reaper has it (with about 5 different curve types) and that be free. I love my Reaper, though not as much as I love my Buzz.

Fuck exponential automation. Gimme bezier curves with those fancy handles on the vertices for crying out loud!
