metal gear solid 4

weird. what the motherfuck? we had a really great discussion going on there for awhile though. i wonder what happened?

anyhow, i think you'd have to play the game through several times to really get everything out of it. hideo kojima has a serious attitude and ego problem, that's one thing you can gather by playing this game. he might be the japanese version of m night shymalan but is better of course (because he is japanese).

also, i'd like to point out a few common themes here:

1. otacon cries and moans in almost every single cutscene.

2. snake drops and picks up his cigarette for a total onscreen time of let's say... 45 minutes worth of cg?

3. you'd have to really play the game through to be able to effectively comment on it. seriously though.

oh and the product placement was very feature film worthy.

Sometimes I really just struggle to find some sort of common ground among coe's opinions. You will scrutinize Lost or something to the most minute detail and claim whole shows or segments of them are total unwatchable trash because the facial expression of an actor didn't "feel right", yet you will get down on your knees to felate the worst voice over talent combined with the shittiest hack writing ever, so long as it's in a video game, preferably with some homosexual overtones (don't tell me all those guys aren't tapping the shit out of Otacon). Seriously, step back and look at the storyline and acting in ANY game that has come out in the past 10 years, I fucking dare you to find one that would even make it as a 2 hour special on the Sci Fi network, let alone deserves some sort of praise.

catsonearth:

for one, i've never said lost was unwatchable, just that it gets incredibly tedious and its obvious that the writers are trying to be very true to human emotions and motivations, but a lot of times they throw all that to the side if they need somebody to totally contradict themselves for the sake of moving the plot along. which is totally true. and i've never nitpicked over anything as silly as a facial expression not feeling right, although i have commented on the hokeyness of them relying on showing close ups of ben's "crazy eyes" because it inevitably happens at least once every episode he's in.

MGS is not trying to be deep and stay true to human emotions and it doesn't have a bunch of characters named after philosophers. its creating a fantasy world based on an amalgam of 80s sci-fi/action movie concepts that the creators obviously love and want to pay homage to. i mean, the main character is named after snake plissken from escape from ny (they even make a joke about it in pt. 2), the cover for the first metal gear game was based on kyle reece from the terminator, snake was conceptualized as a mixture of kurt russell, christopher walken and jean claude van damme. it's part of a whole subgenre of japanese art that was incredibly influenced by 80s american culture that i personally find very interesting culturally, socially and artistically.

i don't find the voice acting in any of the metal gear games to be all that bad and the story, while ridiculous, is actually pretty cool and fun. kojima handles his crazy stories with the kind of approach james cameron or john carpenter uses to tell their crazy stories. it's all in the approach, if you handle something with conviction even the craziest thing can play totally believable in the context of the world you're creating. but you also have to remember a few things - 1. this game is translated from japanese and 2. america is still a country that considers anything animated to be childish and therefore the state of voice acting for animated projects reflects that lack of sophistication. but in the world of dubbed japanese content, metal gear is pretty damn good. it's certainly better than every single anime dub i've ever watched.

i just hate when people blindly hate on things because they don't fit into some kind of tiny little mold of what they deem to be acceptable or cool. saying something is stupid because you can't get passed the code names of the characters and writing it completely off because of that is just plain retarded and closed minded. especially when there are reasons the characters have such names and the names come from a different culture where they don't have the exact same implications as they do here. do you think super mario bros is retarded because you don't like the name "goomba"? no, it's just a fucking name and that's the kind of names they happen to have in that universe. you get over it and enjoy it for what it is. there are different ways to tell stories and there are different levels to appreciate things at. honestly, if you can't just sit back, relax and enjoy someone else's artwork, then you're a fucking loser in my book. my main problem with lost is that the artwork often gets muddied up by the ineptitude of all the people sticking their hands in the pot. MGS is a well-crafted story that does exactly what it sets out to do. shit, it even has depth to it and has a message. sure, it's silly sometimes, but it's supposed to be silly because it's also a kind of satire on our reality.

Snake is one of the best characters in Super Smash Bros Brawl. I thought you guys should know that.

Mirezzi:

Well, I thought Resident Evil 4 was quite easily one of the few best video games ever made despite and because of the cheesy acting and writing.

I'm not sure if it's fair to compare RE4 to MGS, but I do think RE4 might have benefit from less homoerotic Squaresoft character design, compelling writing, and of course, less retarded voice acting. You could overhaul the RE universe completely and maybe improve it. Then again, if it had been conceived and written to be too realistic (like a film for example) or too nihilistic (like Fallout), maybe I'd resist the escape. There's a touch of Hardy Boys innocence in the heroes and heroines of Raccoon City that makes it immediately accessible but fun, especially when they cross paths with hideously creepy, tentacle-porn uber monsters. You'd never make the mistake of taking the story too seriously, for example, and therefore you'd never call it "pretentious."

About halfway through RE4, I started to think of all the characters, dialog, etc. as something Paul Verhoeven would get a kick out of...I mean, the Resident Evil world is populated by just about the most fascistic, racist, puerile idiots I can imagine. It's like Heinlein's Starship Troopers. You've got all these gorgeous quasi-Asians and lilly-white crackers running around spouting chivalry and moralist nonsense while flirting awkwardly (threatening to fuck one another, which of course they never do, only adding to the world's neo-puritan fascism). Meanwhile, by supplying its characters with a vast array of spectacular weaponry, the technocratic militarism of Resident Evil is activated in earnest, allowing Leon/Chris/Jill/Claire et al to eradicate the Spaniards, Negros, or other white trash undesirables. Even if you don't buy the race angle, and I'm not really gonna sell it too hard, there's clearly something fascistic going on.

I guess what I'm saying is that whether it's treated ironically or not, the setting of Resident Evil is hilariously conceived and for me only adds to the game. Maybe I'll find the same true of MGS, so I've decided to keep it.

mgs4 > gta 4

by a long shot. game of the year.

Nah. I disagree. I loooove MGS4 as well as GTA4, but my criteria for GTA being better is the fact that it's gameplay is IMMENSELY more prevalent. MGS is more movie than game. Whereas GTA still retains immensely satisfying, infinitely deeper, gameplay options that you can jump right into whenever you please, not to mention it's own engrossing, though not nearly as rich, story. I think it's speaks to GTA's accomplishment as a game that you can have a huge amount of fun without even touching the story mode, whereas in MGS there is minimal replay value and no option to backtrack. You are on a set course with a series of extremely fun hoops to jump through in MGS, whereas GTA is a sprawling playground for you to fuck around in and do whatever you please.

MGS is pretty much the same way except the characters don't really fall into that overly feminine, pretty boy with androgynous clothing and asymmetrical hairdos category. they're more like 80s action movie archetypes with a little comic book superhero thrown in. the closest they come to the androgynous squaresoft character design is raiden, but he isn't that over the top. he's basically just a fresh faced young lad with longish white/blond hair, but they only designed him that way because his character was supposed to be young and naive so they could use him as a pawn.

i dunno, if you liked RE4, i don't see why you wouldn't like MGS as well. if you haven't played the others, you might be missing something though. i'm sure the new one stands on its own as well, but there's a lot of backstory that you kinda have to play through and experience to really understand. you could read up about it, but it's different when you're watching it unfold as you go. it draws you in more. and most importantly, MGS isn't just about the story, it's about the experience of playing through the story. there's a lot that just doesn't translate to words.

Mirezzi:

Wait a minute, COE. You haven't even played MGS4? WTF.

Whoa! Hey Thanks a lot Mirezzi you TOTALLY saved my awesome video game thread.

This actually reminds me of when Raiden jumped through through corridor and started killing the gekko's legs with his sword on his feet. except on the internet and with posts.

haha, i've played a demo so far. i don't own a ps3 though. the playstation store is a block away from my office and i've got a homie that works there, so he hooked it up so i could play for awhile on the huge LCD they have there. i didn't see any of the story or anything, just played around in game for a bit. it was enough to make me consider for a brief moment buying a ps3 just for this game, but i remembered all the rumors that it might get ported to the 360 at some point and thought better of it. my birthday is in sept., so if i haven't heard anything more about a 360 version by then, i'll probably just get a ps3 as a present to myself.

the last 3 metal gear games are among my favorite games of all time and from what i played it seems like pt 4 has improved on the others in pretty much every aspect. being able to shoot in first person and over the shoulder is a welcome addition. the craziest thing to me though is the body movements of the characters running around the levels. they feel a lot more fluid and realistic than any other game i've seen so far. i might be jumping the gun a bit here since i didn't get to play for too long, but the graphics may even be better than COD4, which was pretty damn impressive itself, though the levels might not be as varied as they were in that game. the only thing i'm not sure about is the weapons dealer guy...don't know if that's a good addition or not, but like i said, i didn't play for long so i didn't really get to scratch more than the surface. can he customize/modify weapons for you or are you stuck with whatever you find and unlock plus the ones he's got?

Anyone else loving the gun system in this game (esp on the second time thru)? Being able to keep yourself stocked with ammo at all times (as long as you can afford it) is such a nice unexpected touch to not only mgs but any game really.

I find the weapon system the weakest part of the game. It just feels so easy, cheesy, and convenient.

i just played up until act 4 with a friend, and have to say the cut scene thing is really excessive this time around. there is barely any play! we joked that at times they forgot they were making a video game. at least on MGS2 you could play for a long while before a long cut scene.

im a fan of the series but this seriously dissapointed me. well maybe part of it was because my friend set it on easy. maybe my mind will change if i ever get a chance to give to play it all by myself.

Thats too bad. You find people complain about games like Haze where you only get 4 weapons in the entire game, and in mgs4 they give you over 70 fully customizable realistic guns and its too easy? I think there is a lot to explore here, at least more then your average game. I was pleasantly surprised to find out a lot of the guns of Call of Duty 4 were included in the game such as my favorite gun in COD4, the P90. I really don't know whats cheesy about this, except for one gun in particular (solar) but I think its hilarious.

Too convenient? Is that really a complaint? I suppose you could be forced to take all your locked guns to Drebin someplace on the battlefield in every skirmish to sell and buy guns there, but if that were the case then people would complain. I think its a fair system and it also extends to multiplayer well.

What other game do you think has a better gun system, just curious?

In Metal Gear, I like hunting out and finding everything I can get, I just don't feel like buying things whenever I want them to really "jive" with the experience is all.

What in the hell happened to the other thread? Did somebody delete it (not bothered to go through the logs to find out)

Well, I beat Raging Raven (2nd boss) last night - she was pretty easy, actually. Few hits with the RPG-7 and her ass was mine.

Oh, and who was creeped out by

Big Boss' semi-skeletal torso in the back of the van? Fucking jumped in my seat when Snake put his hand near it and it moved under the plastic.

I don't mind the excessive cut scenes (yes, there are quite a few) as Kojima-sama is using them to advance the story. I do LOVE how some blend right into the action (the motorcycle chase/escape is a good example of this)

My son started his own file, skipped all the cutscenes he saw while I was playing, and yesterday beat the game (I think his total playtime was less than 18hrs). Amazing game, certainly one of the best, and the ending was very satisfying.

It's not exactly epic, but Drake's Fortune is one of the funnest games I've played in years. The second installment is coming out later this year and it looks incredible.

Yeah, Uncharted is pretty much awesome. Sure, the combat gets repetitive after awhile, but it's still replayable as hell, because of the story and all around polish on that game. A great adventure.

Uncharted 2 is looking even better. And Infamous seems like it'll be another sweet PS3 title.. Seems like this year I'll be playing more than mostly just blurays on my system.
