Lucid Dreaming

If you've managed to lucidly dream then tell us what you've done or suggest things to do.

If you haven't and want to, then write a "C!" on your hand and every time you see it check to see if you're awake by trying light switches or looking at a digital watch - for some reason, our minds can synthesize whole worlds and characters within them whilst asleep but they can't deal with digital watch faces.

Sometimes I realize that I am dreaming but just because I have this awareness it doesn't necessarily mean that I can take full advantage of it the way I might like to. The illogical nature of the dream realm still governs my thought processes. For example, I have lost count of the number of times that as soon as I realize I am dreaming, the first thing I do is pull down my pants and take a dump in a crowded public place! I don't fantasize about doing this in real life but apparently it is my favorite lucid dreaming past-time. Go figure.

Every morning, usually about 3-4 am to about 6-7 am. Its like a 2nd life sometimes and I've noticed all sorts of weirdness like:

I rarely, if ever, encounter someone in my dream state that I know in real life - yet I can remember in detail apperances of these encounters.

I can get up, take a piss, drink a glass of water, and go lay back down and jump back into my dream state. It isn't a pause button though, I don't start where I woke up just in the same place and same setting, same 'story line'.

While I'm taking a leak I can think about what I was just dreaming about, think about what I might do when I go back, etc. I usually have some awareness of the fact that I'm dreaming albeit it doesn't translate to "Hey look I can fly" or anything like that. Usually I'm aware enough that I can choose to stay dreaming and ignore my wife, or wake up and tell her 10 more minutes and go back to dream land.

I never dream about 'fantasy' stuff like flying or monsters, its always real world stuff with a drop of weird.

I usually dream of places I've been before, but they appear different. Shops in different spots, different brands, different styles.

A lot of the time it has me thinking about parallel dimensions, string theory and the idea of existence being multi-layered as a result of choice, 10 dimensions, shit like that. At the same time I don't know many people who have these kind of dreams. Most people have fantasy dreams or dreams with impossibility in them. Mine I are always realistic, and sometimes can be quite boring - in example I dreamt about mowing the lawn of some Library like building yesterday morning and then having a cup of coffee with the librarian.

Well lucid dreams are generally more down-to-Earth compared to normal dreams and sometimes are boring e.g when people have false awakenings and just dream about getting up in the morning - hardly riveting...

And no, having lucid dreams doesn't mean you can control them, apparently you have to practice. I've only had one or two; i've tried to fly in most of them although I feel frightened about loosing control and falling down to the ground, even though I know I'm dreaming which is funny.

1. wake yourself up 3/4 through your normal sleep pattern. chant to yourself several questions along with answers; make sure the last is "am i dreaming? yes". something like "how old am i? 34. where do i keep my change? rectum. am i dreaming? yes". do it a few times and go to back to bed. it will reoccur in your dreams and the last question will hopefully bring you into a lucid state. just don't get too excited or you'll lose it. this is the only method that's worked for me.

2. why the fuck is this in the aphex twin forum?

3. why the fuck aren't you reading the rules?

1. Aphex Twin has on many occasions claimed that he lucidly dreams and that many of his inspiration for his music comes from lucid dreams. (See Wire interview)

2. Why the fuck aren't you reading his interviews?

my feelings are can be best explained in this (thread.)

Clearly not, I still don't understand what the problem is? RDJ has had vividly lucid (if that's not a tautology) dreams and consequently, I created a topic on the subject to discuss other people's experiences. If you still have a problem, then i'll add this question: "How do you think the tracks from SAW & SAW II were inspired by his lucid dreams, specifically?", then let the topic run where it wants. It seems to work for other topics on this board...

Also lately when I have lucid dreamed I've been able to go on epic and amazingly scary adventures. They are so odd and everything seems symbolic. Often I get talked to by some kind of entity while in some specifically special place, like a pool on a tower. But I never know what the voice is saying...makes me feel weird in the morning.

Guest Quixote

About five years ago I become good at getting lucid dreams to start.

Someone (probably even on this forum) had said that you had to concentrate a lot during the day about what's normal and what's dream-like, and somehow it would filter into your consciousness while you were sleeping. Just throughout the day, ask yourself what's normal and what's not - get into that routine. It started working.

A few examples that kicked me into lucid-mode to explain:

The first time, I was dreaming that I was in a van with my friend while my mom was at a party - we had to wait in the car like I was a little kid or something. We got bored so we started rolling the van side-over-side while we were in it for no apparent reason. My friend stuck his head out the window, so that while it was rolling his head should have gotten crushed between the ground and the van. Being a dream, he was fine - and I thought to myself "hrm this is weird - he should be dead but he's not even hurt - I must be dreaming...". And so with this realization I was given full control. I tried to leave the van to do whatever I wanted, but I couldn't deal with it and woke up. But it was a start.

My favorite one was when I was having a dream where I was going through these tunnels with my grandfather and a 5-year old version of my little brother (he was really like 16 in real-life at the time). I didn't pick up on that, but at the end of the tunnels we came out to a restaurant and sat down at a table with my grandmother. She had died like a year before in real-life, so again, it was a moment where I went, "wait, she's dead... I must be dreaming" and so I immediately went outside and starting flying around all of these places I knew - where ever I thought of I could see, and I picked up some old friends and we all flew around.

And as you can tell, there was no science to it for me. Lots of weird things happen in dreams - it would just be occasionally that I would pick up on one of the details being funny and take control after this lucky realization.

Most of them thereafter involved flying and exploring whatever I thought of after that.

I haven't had many dreams at all in years though, sadly, and lucid ones in even longer.
