Layers in wav editors

Is there any decent wav editors that allow layers? So for example if I wanted to construct a new beat over a break and then take the original out at the end so i'm left with my new beat, how could i do that?

Adobe Audition springs to mind. Also, I think Audacity is multitrack capable, and it's free.

wow this idea had never occurred to me. i use goldwave for 99% of what i do

but isn't what you're asking for essentially just a sequencer?

in a weird way, i like having one layer only, because if i could undo and adjust all the time, i would never get anything finished! too much of a perfectionist.

Though true, it could be done on a sequencer, I guess I could give it a go, I thought it would be too tricky/unprecise

a good sequencer (live/sonar/cubase/logic/pro tools le/whatever) is the most precise environment you could work in for this kind of thing.

why try to do it in a basic wav editor?

i dunno man. i used to do the same thing. multitrack wave editors really made my life easier. i highly recommend them.

i reccommend getting audacity. it's kind of clunky when you are working with say, 10 or more sounds, but you'll get the feel for it and learn how to work with it efficiently. it's a good free program. i use it for everything now.
