I'm actually starting to look into buying good monitors for a decent price as well.

I saw a thread on here that said that the Behringer TRUTH series monitors are good, though a friend I have who has worked in studios said they are somewhat unreliable.

He suggested that I should just look on Craigslist every day until some good ones come up, which could possibly save me hundreds of dollars.

But yeah I'll be looking back at this thread to see the suggestions as well.

I've been using Alesis Monitor 1 MK2 actives for a few years now.. And I'd say they're OK for the price when I bought them - there's probably something better around now though. They're not the most subtle of speakers, and can tend to be a bit flabby on the bass end. You can hear the ports breathing when you go down really low sine wave stuff.. I'm used to them though, so my mixes tend to translate OK. That's probably the key issue with monitor speakers anyway.

In my opinion you should never allow anything Behringer into your studio if you can possibly avoid it. They're basically disposable electronics. I mean they kind of do a job for a price.. But everything behringer I've ever come across just slowly breaks and dies. Avoid.

I've heard good things about the m-audio monitors - but then I only have a slightly higher opinion of m-audio than behringer.. and I've not heard them myself.

KRKs tend to get a lot of love from the electronica scene, but again I've never heard a pair myself.

A couple of my mates have the Event TR 8 XLs which are probably within your price range.. They sound very 'nice' to me, maybe a bit flattering.. Very satisfying deep bass, don't know how accurate they are. My mates' mixes always tend to sound a bit harsh with them to me, but then maybe they just suck at mixing. They're certainly impressive sounding speakers though - but that's not always what you want from a monitor..

If they're boxed and new then that's an OK deal.. Works out as about £147 - I got mine new about 5 years ago for £220.
