FL studio question

Recommended Posts

is it possible to apply an effect to several mixer channels at once? for example, i have the ezdrummer vst set up so that it sends each drum out to a different channel, each with its own EQ, so this takes up the first 7 channels of the mixer. is there a way to apply a compressor to just the drum tracks? putting compression on the final mix won't work because i'm going to have more than just drums in the song - there will be audio tracks of live guitar, bass etc.

You can run all your drums into a channel (instead of the default master channel) and apply compression there.

why not put the compressor on a send track and drop a send to it in the first 7 channels. i think this saves memory over putting the compressor as an insert on all 7 mixer channels

will that allow me to still have individual EQ settings for each drum?

how do sends work in FL? are they just a 50/50 mix or can you adjust the mix amount? i just want the pure compressed sound and no dry sound.

sorry if i seem like a bit of a noob, because i am when it comes to FL. i'm trying to take it slowly because i'm going to use it for my next recordings - which won't be anywhere near electronic music by the way, heh.

Yes, because you will still have all the original channels for your drums. With each of those you can do individual eqing, panning, effects etc., then combine them in your drum channel, where you can put effects over everything, which then goes to the master. I do it all the time. I prefer it to using the sends, especially with compression.

Okay - I'll assume you've already routed each of your drum sounds to their own channels.

Pick an empty channel on your mixer for your "drums" channel.

Click on one of your drum hit channels, for example the kick drum channel, on the mixer so it's highlighted.

On your "drums" channel, right click on the little arrow at the bottom of the channel. A message will come up that says "route to this channel only" or something, so yeah, do that.

Then click on your next drum channel, for example the snare drum, and repeat.

You can test if you've done it right by muting the drum channel. If you've routed your kick and snare for example, they should mute when you mute the drum channel.

Hope this makes sense - I'm really not too good at explaining these things!
