He seemed to be concerned with maximizing the use of limited gear; thoroughly understanding the potential of your equipment and making full use of its abilities. In listening, I find that far too many musicians are engrossed in the multitude of layered textures and unusual sounds that can be had in the world that software production permits. They fail to develop core ideas that reflect a piece's character or style, often the result of a desire to dazzle the listener with exotic frequencies; This all in an attempt to redirect attention paid to the work's innate weaknesses.

you really have a problem with that?

the interview doesn't express any dislike of it, he said great sounds can turn out to be 100 layered sounds (something like that), and talked about portishead being more minimal (like the helicopter sound is one patch!). not quite a criticism.

you've got it backwards actually, he has some gear that's limited, but not limited gear. in fact, an excess of equipment, so not even close. he also admitted he gets stuck messing around with modular and seemed like someone who is "engrossed in the multitude of unusual sounds", and some of those sounds come from limited bits of equipment that he can't resist buying.

these kind of interviews make it seem like the music must be really amazing.

but it ain't

I gotta say I agree, although The Rip and its synth(s?) at the end are quite brilliant. And I guess I like the reverb of those 'machineguns' in Machinegun.
