I'm after a synthesizer FX unit

Recommended Posts

Guest meneedit

For a long time ive been after an FX unit that has:

-32 band EQ and a parametric EQ

-Flanger

-Phaser

-Distortion

-Decimator

-Delay (one with heaps of parameters)

-Reverb (one with heaps of parameters)

If you know of any FX units that meet these specs or come close please let me know

Second-hand Boss SE50 or SE70. Their reputation is growing exponentially these days. Good effects plus a sweet vocoder.

I wasnt happy with the 'Low cut' and 'High cut' of the reverb on the boss GT-8 (designed for guitars i know but im guessing those two would contain similar reverbs.....?)

thanks again,

I'll check some of them out and let yas know if I find something good.

These are studio (not guitar-specific) units from the early nineties. Worlds apart.

edit: but you should never buy a multi fx for the reverb!

Ok i'll check the boss ones out.

Really? So i'll never find a decent reverb in a Multi FX unit?

also 'Mrx', 'Ten Fingers' and 'Chunky' I should point out that I am not after a sampler or anything with keys on it. Just an FX unit :smiling:

The Nord Modulars arent samplers, and the Micro Modular and G2 Engine have no keys. You just happen to get some extra stuff as a bonus.

i'm selling my a5000 soon, in fact i'm selling all of my equipment so i'll link to the stuff as it's up

you can get old school verb for real cheap, get a few of them.... plate reverb, spring reverb... bla bla reverb. err yeah, but you get the point, old school stuff like 70's for good prices.

with loads of parameters? :tongue2:

in that case get an orville unit

Except for the reverb (which I believe is in the G2) I would say a Nord Micro Modular.

not like you to recommend a nord modular TFTT....

i use a behringer virtualizer pro. they're about $200 new, they have some really great reverbs (i use virtualizer "cathedral" and spring reverb all over my post-rock stuff), a vocoder, leslie simulator, a few different types of delay, chorus, flanger, phaser, distortions, a sampler/looper, and some other stuff. the eq is a bit limiting, but i think it has parametric eq too so it's not too bad. in fact i might go and buy another one or two, hehe!

Ensoniq DP2 or DP4 (DP4+ if you can get one, not the pro)

They still go for pretty cheap, and they're a genuine classic piece of hardware. I like a mix of ITB and hardware, and although I'm currently thinking of selling my analogues, I will never sell my DP2. Go look them up.

A time tested and highly recommended unit is the TC Electronic Fireworx.

MSRP $1500 US dollars, but you can get em half price on ebay.

I've never owned one but have used one, and I must say it is an absolute bang for the buck. I've always been a big fan of TC's products, and especially their reverb algorithms. Lot's of people on other forums swear by it. I know a few "pro" musicians such as Amon Tobin have praised it. It has loads of parameter options and it's basically like a modular fx unit.

Only thing it's missing is your eq requirements, but I'd go for a full on eq only unit for what you want. Something like the Alesis "DEQ 230" , has a great interface, I've never used it though so i can't speak for it's quality. I usually put my trust in alesis to make good hardware as I've used a bunch and never been let down.

I might be able to get one of these for a decent price, 50 euros or so. I read they're pretty good, but I'm not sure about the MIDI features: Is it possible to control Dry/Wet and most other parameters with other controllers?

On the specifications page of behringer.com it says "Extensive MIDI implementation!", but that's basically a meaningless statement.

edit: talking about the "Behringer Virtualizer Pro DSP2024P" specifically here

oh yeah and does anybody know what's the sampler like on this unit by chance?

i haven't tried the midi on it yet, but i'm pretty sure (from just skimming the section in the manual) that you can control most of the settings via midi.

and regarding the sampler, i haven't played with it very much, but all i could do with it was simple looping and start/stop. might be different if you hooked a keyboard up to it though. you can also adjust the beginning and end points of the sample while it's looping, which i thought was kinda cool (i'm sure it's possible to do this in most samplers anyway but i had fun with it hehe)

just missed it, i wanted to get one from a bloke who was selling them for 45 euros, but they were all gone, too bad
