dj questions

i'm going to be investing a good sum of money on dj equipment so i thought i'd ask some questions.

i'm going to buy a set of technics probably the 1210 mk5. i know that technics really are the way to go, industry standard etc etc.

something that i'm not quite sure are is the tt stylus/ cartridge. i actually don't know the difference between the two. i'm thinking that a set of 2 for around the 200 dollar mark is a good investment?

next the mixer... there are a bunch of models and brands it all looks very confusing. i here rane is the best but it is also really expensive so maybe i'll get one of those in the future and a cheaper one to begin with... any company/ models i should look at? i don't really wnat to spend over 500 dollars U.S. , i think anything more is silly right now

hm, what else what else... um, headphones: do i really need headphones that can fold so i can do the one ear thing? it kinda makes sense

yeah if you want to talk about dj'ing etc. i never have seriously, just have played around with a set at my firneds place a number of times and it's always me just fucking around , attempting to scratch... i've never tried to mix. i guess that's important for me to say that, i will be generally mixing beat heavy type music like different dance styles and more leftfield drilly electronic music stuff

oh and do you reckon i should buy a coffin for my setup to keep it all together?

oh, and if i want to utilize a kaoss pad do i need a mixer with more than two channels?

the 1210's are okay but you'll be paying a lot more for something that doesn't really matter.

get the shure M44G, it will be the one you'll need and the kind of cart you should get used to. me personally, im going to get some ortofon scratch carts because i do too much cueing and cuts than the m44 can handle.

i have a vestax mixer, it works great, it has a customized fader for fast cuts.

some advice regarding the coffin/roadcase. i got a fullsize odyssey roadcase for my two turntables and the mixer. it has wheels and is very tough, but it's way too bulky and is almost too much for me to move on my own. i suggest getting separate cases for each different piece of equipment, i.e. two deck cases and a mixer case. you can rest the mixer in between them.

make sure you have a very sturdy table otherwise trying to do anything will be pointless.

if you're halfway serious about becoming any sort of hireable DJ, get a PA and some big speakers, which are an investment in themselves.

how do you mix that you need the ortofon scratchers and not me?

ok, if that is a good cartridge for me, the shure. is that all i need to buy and it will screw into the technics arm? ( i really don't know the names)

i mean , i should get two tt's and two of those shure, , they looks different to the other ones, ortofon's, which have a long sleak metal bit...

they'll explain the difference. i do a lot of heavy mixing on my turntables so i have come to understand the ortofon carts are designed to be more stable for heavy mixing, and produce a more even sound. i still get good performance on my current carts but i'm curious to see the difference myself.

i don't want to join a forum, just curious if these are all i need necause the ortofons sure don't look like these, they are long and pointy

get a pair of the cartridges off ebay, btw.

they screw right in.

there will come a time after awhile where the stylus will wear out. you can replace the stylus without replacing the whole cartridge.

ok so they screw right in, they are a lot cheaper, the reviews say they are good, and the replacement bit is cheap, i think i'm set then.

can we talk about mixers?

different cartridges are designed for different needs dude... that's why they look different. im having to prepare myself for the task of perfectly leveling out my decks when i get the new ortofon cartridges. it's gonna be ass.

well i figured i too might need something for heavy mixing cause i'm new to it and will be doing a lot of it(unsuccessfully), the price point is good though

you need to get a mixer that you will be able to grow into. you can spend a million dollars on a rane mixer but you might need extra inputs and whatnot. don't worry about mixers with bpm counters and special stupid effects. that's just extra $$$... get a good sturdy DJ mixer with plenty of ins and outs. my vestac pmc III5a (or whatever the fuck it is) is pretty decent, but i think i'm going to go for a mixer that has a USB on it so i can do some final scratch type stuff. it's really easy to get time-coded vinyl to work well without spending 5 grand on a dj q-bert setup.
