Can You Sync Two Laptops running Ableton w/each other?

okay i guess it's pretty easy :]

i have only one mac here so can't test it right now, maybe later.

- have laptops connected via ad-hoc or some local wifi network.

- open audio-midi setup, click on midi, click on network. on one mac, choose new session. then on the other, join that session. et voila. there's some latency adjustment tool built in. that setup seems pretty self-explanatory, there's also a nice big (?) button.

then, i guess, you have to set the DAW on one mac to master and the other(s? probably can connect more than two...) to slave.

can't wait to try this.

whoa, in the help file it says you can not only sync, but also route midi signals, so you could use one machine to control software/hardware which run on/are connected to another machine.

Oh didn't even know that. Awesome :)

i onced synced up a session with shitmat all we used was

a usb to midi cable into a tr-505 then midi out into his midi device which was a faderfox into his laptop

i could press start on my ableton and it would start his up as well. it was pretty handy.

wanna do a live set with someone else running ableton. any way we can sync our midi clocks?

Alex and I tried to do this once, and we got so frustrated that we almost came to the point of buttfucking each other.

On your couch.

when u were sleeping.

through the years, a man peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, tools, stars, horses and people. shortly before his death, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his own face.

fuck all of you, i have a pc. thanks.

that's how i feel all day in art school.

lol same w/ music school

there are programs for pcs to do this of course

http://www.nerds.de/

loopbe1 is a neat cross application midi mapper too

Used to do it with two pc laptops / two bcf2000s and a midi cable between the bcfs. Worked ok, but would drift noticably after 30secs or so if syncing beats. Good for doing a kinda gimpy 'battle' scenario, where you'd mix into the end of the other persons liveset segment... or bump them off by bringing eight new stems into the mix.

If I was doing that sort of set again I'd get an rm1x or something with two midi outs and use that as the master clock; Utilising one laptop as a master would always seem to put a strain on it and the mtc would be subsequently affected.

I was going to start a thread about beat matching devices that cannot be midi-synced like a DS with Nitrotracker and iPod Touch with Beatmaker, and PsP running Rhythm 8. I have all of these cool portable pieces of gear but besides the DS, I dont really have a great way to beat match them with my grooveboxes and stuff.

Any advice?

no advice here... least i know it SHOULD be possible to add midi support to basically any piece of hardware that's able to run java applications. for example using mobile.processing you could midify your cellphone (haven't tried the mobile variant though)
