Strange Urgent Buffer Underrun Problem

Recommended Posts

ok so i have an old laptop, 3.0ghz windows fella. not enough ram (756) but it worked for years as a home studio hub, using both an Ediral FA66 firewire and a Audiophile USB.

i'm doing a 'duet' with laptops, so i brought out the old laptop, reinstalled a stripped down version of XP, installed my new Ozonic and...terible buffer underruns.

so i installed my old FA66, which i KNOW worked for YEARS, and i still have underruns. tried two different drivers in each soundcard, no dice.

what the HELL would make this suddenly not capapable of being an audio computer? it worked before!!

i have been using my old laptop as a computer in my living room, hooked up to my TV, to watch movies. not treating it too well. but how would that make my computer's processing power SLOWER?

thank u!!

my guess it has something to do with that stripped down version of xp

ZOMG! Lazerz pew pew pew!!!!11!!1!!!!1!oneone!shift+one!~!!!

probably you have some overlapping IRQ issue. not necessarily a conflict, but maybe your videocard is sharing the IRQ with your USB/firewire controller. You should try to reinstall windows and press F5 right at the start of the setup screen, you will see something like this:

- ACPI Multiprocessor PC

- ACPI Uniprocessor PC

- Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC

- Compaq SystemPro Multiprocessor or 100% Compatible PC

- MPS Uniprocessor PC

- MPS Multiprocessor PC

- Standard PC

- Standard PC with C-Step i486

- Other

choose "Standard PC" option

now you will be able to assign a different IRQ to every component. If you want to avoid all this tedious procedure, try instaling a retail version of XP. If your room mate does not have problems is because

1) was lucky with the IRQ auto assignment

or

2)he's on a desktop.

mind that in "standard PC" mode your laptop will not run on battery power automatically if you take power adapt0r off the net.
