EFX Send & Return question

Recommended Posts

trying to record in Ableton going thru a Kaoss Pad, so i'm sending from my sound card, which is dual 1/4" jacks, to the 1/4" inputs of my Peavey mixer, no biggie. however, my EFX Send is a single 1/4" out, then the KP is stereo RCAs, both in and out, but my EFX Return is again dual 1/4" plugs. do i just get some adapter to run the EFX Send from a single 1/4" to RCAs, or will that add a ton of gain and noise?

am i right on this chain V

V

sound card output>mixer>efx send>kaoss pad>efx return>sound card input?

a decent quality adaptor won't add much noise.

better still, just buy or build the correct cable.

edit: also depends what you want to process... are you kaossing the whole mix, or just a single channel within?... which secondarily raises the question.. do you want to process live, or apply processing and record it to the pc?

i'd be using this to mix tracks together, so i would probably go with doing the EFX afterward, at least until i got the hang of it. i'm already using some Monster RCA cables, so should i go with one of their adapters, assuming it's quality and won't add much noise,

or go with a separate cable from another brand? i've never used Hosa before, but i couldn't find a better brand that makes this cable

ideally, i would just like to record a separate channel into Ableton for the EFX into the mix, but the way the Kaoss works, you have to send it a signal for it to generate EFX.

i have no problem with reasonably priced cables, it's just my entire mix is going through them so i don't want to degrade my final recording.

  • 1 month later...

effects send 1/4" jacks are typically tip-send, ring-return, sleeve-ground. so get a pair of 1/4" TRS -> l/r RCA plugs.

tip on the TRS is almost always left (white) RCA. ring is right (red). so the two tip (white) RCAs need to go to the inputs on the KP2, and the red ones in the output. i.e., one cable each per channel of effects send/return.

PS yes your chain looks correct

it's called an "insert"

also, don't worry about the cable quality. people worry too much. about stuff. also, record everything in mono. on a type I cassette.

once out of necessity i bought a pair of XLR cables from guitar center. i needed them real fast so didn't specify what i wanted . . sure enough they brought me a pair of 20' monster cables. sure enough the total was about $114. sure enough i returned them later that day. sure enough i put them through my entire digestive tract as revenge. sure enough.

i had a mate, hifi enthusiast, you know the type.

built his own valve amp. v. nice... great sound etc.

full on appreciation of his madskillz.

until he started showing me pics on the web of a wooden volume knob which cost a hundred and twenty quid. for a knob. 'improves performance' said the blurb. 'how?' said i.

needless to say i won the argument, even if he doesn't think so.

lol. twat.

so are Mogamis as much hype as Monster? i know they're more expensive but the jackheads at guitar center always preach the gospel.

well, now that i've dissed high-end cable, i have to admit i do use mogami for XLRs, with neutrik connectors. i strongly doubt either has a better sound than their competitors'. i just use them because they're manufactured to high quality standards and durable. the new neutrik right angle connectors can be reconfigured at home to any right angle you please, which i love. the mogami has very little cable memory and wraps really well. i wrap and unwrap those cables every day i work, and use them in all kinds of places, so those things are important to me.

this is a very long way to say: as long as you don't get the absolute worst cable possible, you're probably going to be fine. i've only had one cable go bad on me so far and it was from radio shack.

with that said monster cables are a pain in the ass to wrap and are obviously meant to sit around in some high-end church somewhere. monster and their flashy, futuristic-looking connectors can suck my dick.
