WATMM Monthly Remix Competition -> Round 3

(see previous threads for how this thing started, round 1, and round 2)

The winner of Round 2 was Beneboi with 'Planet Plymouth Rock' ... congratulations! You can hear more of his tunes at www.myspace.com/beneboi.

Beneboi also had a hand in one of the other entries, here's the details of all the tracks from Round 2:

Coming a close joint second in a vote that had a whole load of quality tracks were 'Pilgrim massacre plymoth rock remix' by Fluorescent Grey (www.myspace.com/fgrey) and 'beach bummer boys mix' by Monolith (www.myspace.com/monolithmountains). Monolith also came second in Round 1, so if this was the sort of competition that gave out trophies he would probably get some sort of outstanding achievement commemoration silver plate or something.

However, the only prize in this competition goes to the winner, and the prize is to pick the source track for the next round.

So the source track for Round 3, as chosen by Beneboi, is

Isaac Hayes - 'Walk on By'

A classic track from the recently-late Isaac Hayes. Here it is on YouTube:

The single version is about 4:33, and there is a longer album version (on 'Hot Buttered Soul') thats 12 minutes long. Both should be easy to get hold of. For example you can get a non-DRM mp3 of the single from 7Digital for 79p.

Here's a reminder of our Simple Rules:

Simple Rules:

- its a remix competition

- we're taking remix in the very broadest sense of the word

- voting will be anonymous

- we can do it with threads and polls and PMs, for now. Maybe we'll build a site later.

- winner of each round gets to choose the source track for the next round

- rounds will take 4 weeks for submitting, then 1 or 2 weeks for voting

So round 3 starts now!

If you want to submit a track, please PM it to me (or email to mail@koanotic.org) by 23:00 GMT on Monday 20th October.

After that we will have a week of voting, and then we'll be moving on to round 4 ...

haha i guessed who beneboi and monolith was. i guess i cant complain about tying with Monolith for 2nd place! but id love to be the winner only so i can pick a non pop/funk/rock track ;)

i actually didn't have a specific one in mind, did you before you won? id have to give it some thought.

i was actually going to pick The Rhythms gonna get you, by Gloria Estefan, but at the last minute decided to pick something a bit more samplable

the song is amazing, but it's been sampled and used so many times..

i'll still givve it a shot

by the way, in November I'm going travelling for four months so I won't be around to organise Round 4. (I'll be able to see Round 3 through to its conclusion though)

So hopefully someone else will take up the thread-making duties for Round 4 and onwards.

I think its fair game to point out instances of self-promotion from the voting thread : )

There were a few others, but we havent had anything too blatant. Most of the positive comments have been very genuine.

some stats from Round 2:

No of entries: 10

No of votes: 29

No of downloads: including the ZIP file, each track was downloaded at least 54 times. Some tracks downloaded over 80 times

(and the downloads are still continuing now)

... so we did well on downloads, but not so well on votes. Perhaps people found it hard to choose or something??

i downloaded the zip twice, and one of the individual tracks once. i'm sure people like me account for a lot of the difference.
