Yes, indeed. That´s my theory also. I can give many examples. But that would be pointless, as we agree. But another thing. Music can even help remembering something. Craziest example: I once painted the walls of my room listening to an album. I didn´t really like that album (faith no more album of the year) so it got forgotten. But after several years I moved out of the flat and into a new one. There I found that CD again. I listened to it and guess what? I smelled the paint I used years ago. Not in my opinion... a fucking fantastic track is always great alone for its own elements and I rarely link up my strong emotions to certain songs.. like when I need to listen to a song if I'm feeling emotional (sad, OR happy).
