Ableton help

Recommended Posts

hi - I'm new to Ableton on a PC, I can't seem to activate the plugins fodler, no matter what I do. It says I need to set the permissions of the directory to writable

that's another problem, in Vista, If I uncheck the folder's read-only properties. Then reopen the folder properties it still says read-only

Confused. Anyone else had this problem?

ive not had this particular problem but i can imagine your pain, the amount of ridiculous errors ableton throws at me is just insane.

with this, maybe you could try putting all your vst's in my documents, and try that? im pretty sure even in vista my documents is writable.

Vista has some really weird permissions/security stuff... I remember setting up Ableton Live on my friend's laptop took a lot longer than it should have.

Make the folder in the normal c:/program files/steinberg/VstPlugins folder, and then check the properties and make sure everything is allowed.

Then go to the Ableton Live executable, and check the properties, I don't remember if program files have security policies in Vista or not, but it's worth checking.

If none of that works, try to disable as many security features of Vista as possible, and see if it works then.

Cheers I stuck with it's default directory and that seems to have done the trick. It is rather buggy though.

Whist i'm about it - Is the massive latencey on the Computer MIDI Keyboard normal?

try putting Asio4All on your current laptop, it can reduce latency by loads in some cases:

If you do end up getting a new laptop, you don't have to go expensive these days.

And AMD Turion Dual Core or Intel Dual Core (these may be more expensive), will make a huge difference. You can always increase RAM later and most come with more than 1GB already installed. My 1.6Ghz Dual Core laptop is still going strong and it was one of the lower end machines the two or so years ago that I bought it.

thought you had a mac mr raffe? what's happened to that then?

as for ableton, i don't like it myself - i do have a copy on my mac, but i don't think the overall sound quality is that great (apparently it's got a rubbish sound engine) and i don't like the interface. I have always found it to have crap latency too.

if i'm using my mac for music (which i don't that often) i use renoise.

the only pc laptop i would buy would be a vaio though yeah....
