An Taobh Tuathail (The Other Side) has been broadcasting the cream of underground music from around the globe on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta/ANOCHT FM since May 1999. West Kerry native Cian Ó Cíobháin, who has been presenting the show since its very first broadcast, selects the music Mondays to Fridays, 11pm-1am. Last year, Ó Cíobháin responded to demands from listeners to release a compilation of the show's favourite music with An Taobh Tuathail Vol 1.

After the success of the inaugural installment, it only seemed naturally to release a sequel. Much like the first volume, says compiler Ó Cíobhain, I decided to go down the quieter laneways of modern music. Therefore, once more it's tunes for the head & heart more than the feet, drawing on electronica, modern folk, a touch of Balearic & tunes influenced by classical music. Also, in the vein of Vol 1, I believe that the compilation makes most sense to listen to from beginning to end, rather than trying to make sense of it as a ËÅ“random shuffle.

The CD features music from international acts such as Murcof, Colleen and Susanna & The Magical Orchestra, tunes from Irish artists Somadrone, Chequerboard & Boxcutter as well as previously unreleased numbers from Mad Theory, Cane 141 (remixed by Heftord) and Ranger 3

An Taobh Tuathail Vol II is a continuation of Anocht FM's commitment to showcasing new music from around the world, says Seán Ó hEanaigh, head of programming at the station. We hope this CD will satisfy the show's current listeners and also hope it will attract attract new listeners to the programme.

An Taobh Tuathail Vol II

Psychonavigation Records

4/5

For the second volume of highlights from his late hours chill-out show, Radió na Gaeltachta DJ Cian Ó Cíobháin descends deep into the drowsy side of ambient music. From the gently ebbing quasi-classical drone-core of Paris's Colleen to the twinkling cinematic pop of Dublin-based Chequerboard, the tone is hushed and ethereal. There are occasional ripples of excitement - Boxcutter's Bloscid is a skittering piece of 21st-century jungle, while Cane 141 seem to be channeling Radiohead circa OK Computer on Disco Toys. But,mostly, the tone is more flotation tank than hip chill-lounge - ideal for anyone seeking to embark on a cosmic trip from the comfort of their living room. An Taobh Tuathail Vol II [Psychonavigation]

4/ 5

West Kerry DJ delivers superlative modern world / ambient compilation

For the uninitiated, An Taobh Tuathail is a cult Radió na Gaeltachta evening show that translates as "The Other Side" or "The B-Side". A native of West Kerry, DJ Cian O'Ciobhain has been broadcasting the cream of underground world music for almost a decade now, and is deservedly acclaimed for his show. This is his second compilation and, once again, he's gone down the ambient route choosing tracks for the head and the heart more than the feet and the beat.

There are fifteen artists featured, both Irish and international, including Susanna & The Magical Orchestra, Somadrone, Mice Parade, Cane 141,Hannu,Chequerboard, Boxcutter and Sarsparilla. It's a testament to O'Ciobhain's impeccable taste that it all flows together to sound like the work of one soulful artist. Almost 70 minutes long, this beautiful album segues and weaves obscure electronica, modern folk, Balearic and tunes influenced by classical music together in one long, gloriously blissful work of art. There's not much else to say about it. If you're looking for the ultimate chill-out album, this is probably it. Better than Prozac at any rate.
