What are you looking for?

You can't just get some plugins and make good music with them, since some plugins that I may use wouldn't go well with whatever sound you want to go for.

The best way to find plugins is to know what you want, and then search on the internet for plugins that can do what you're looking for.

Things like Reason and Reaktor are an ok place to start I suppose, since with both of those you can get a wide range of instruments/effects, but once again, they may not fit well with what you want to do, and there are less processor intensive ways to get similiar sounds to Reason/Reaktor without having them. Reaktor is a nice and rather simplistic way (compared to things like PD at least) to build your own synthesizers, if you want sounds that are very unique.

i'm looking for effects plugins that would work well in mixing tracks together.

The effects that come with Ableton are pretty good, but if you're talking strictly mixing/mastering, the best set of tools is the "Waves" bundle.

It comes with the L3 Ultramaximizer, which has a very good quality dithering feature (for example if you're rendering to put a track on CD, you set the dither to 16 bits, but make sure you turn off Ableton's built in dithering when you're rendering).

There are many other mastering VSTs out there, another one that I find rather useful is the Ozone by Izotope.

Overall though, once again, you should explore various plugins to see what suits you and your sound the best. These are the ones that I use most of the time, but even then, I sometimes find myself using other plugins for mastering, since each compression plugin will have a different character, and some EQs bring out certain frequencies or dampen them better than others.

i guess i should've mentioned they need to be free plugins.

has two very good free plugs (fuzz & rough rider).. and the rest of their plugs are so inexpensive (compared to the quality) that they might as well be free... we're talking about $29-$49 ($49 is their most expensive plug).

there are other good free plugs (the mda's are ok, as are the dfx plugs...and some others), but if you can afford a computer & an internet connection, you can afford $30-$50 for a plugin every once and a while.
