Guest Helper ET
edit: title is supposed to say midi not didi so i have this casio cz 101, and i want send out midi signal to the keyboard to tell it what to play and then send it back out into my computer and into ableton live. does this make sense? like i want the computer to send midi data into my keyboard, and i want to be able to control waveforms and filters and such, but have the midi data playing the notes and then out the main output and into my computer input. the only thing ive ever used midi for is hooking up a midi keyboard to trigger notes. can anyone help me? Guest Tamas
Go from your MIDI OUT on your audio interface into the MIDI IN (or THRU, if available) of the synthesizer, and then take an audio cable from the OUT on the synth to the IN on your audio interface. Then make sure that the MIDI track in Ableton is sending on the right channel (most synths default to channel 01), and that the Audio in on the Audio track is set to "In" (as upposed to "Auto") and set to the proper Audio channel. You can also use the record button, but if you're not recording, there will be less latency if you just set it to "in". Hope that makes sense. Guest analogue wings
Where the synth at? I program that shit. Guest Tamas
Live should be constantly sending out MIDI data, assuming your MIDI is setup correctly in the options menu. And I assumed you had an audio interface and not a USB to MIDI cable, so just connect the audio cable to the "In" of your soundcard. Guest analogue wings
what do you currently do with your midi-usb cable? do you use it to connect a conrtoller to yr pc? or do you use it to control things from the pc? Guest Helper ET
i use my midi cable to connect my computer to my casio, so i can play notes with the keyboard instead of clicking all the notes with a mouse. so i guess i use it to connect a controller to my pc Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/38874-i-want-to-use-didi/#findComment-851323 Share on other sites
pylonbitch
contrary to what tamas said in his first post in this thread, a midi thru port can not be used as a midi in. (midi in is midi in. midi thru is an output for thru-put signals) i would spend thirty or forty quid and get a midi i/o/ box. Actually, I pay somebody to program that shit and I just put my name on the record. You cool with that? lol! also ET, you should have a MIDI - USB interface plugged into your computer. the interface with either have a box on the end of it or will just have two cables coming out of it. so you plug the MIDI out cable into the MIDI in of your casio thus enabling to control the casio from your computer, then you plug a cable from the MIDI out of your casio to the MIDI in of your USB interface thing thus sending the data from the casio back into your computer. go into the ableton preferences and set everything to on (ticked i think) - MIDI input and output, track sync and remote all ticked. then go into the options menu and click "external MIDI sync" (this is important). this should do it. Bubba69
What kind of soundcard did you say you have, If it has a gameport (like for a joystick), that can easily be converted to midi with a cheap cable. Thats the way it used to be done yo! EDIT: Oh wait you have a usb converter, well that should be easy. Does the thing show up in Lives preferences as an output for midi? It should, but maybe the cable needs drivers in order to work properly or something. Guest analogue wings
ok CZ101 midi out goes to cable midi in CZ101 midi in goes to cable midi out ablleton should have something called "devices" or "midi devices" in its options. make sure the name of yr cable thingy comes up in both the "midi input" and "midi output" sections make a track with some midi on it in ableton in the track properties set the destination to the cable, not the usual softsynth or watever set the channel to 1 on the cz101, set the receive channel to 1 hook up the cz 101 so you can hear it hit play in ableton it works???
