4 track recorder question

With a 4-track, can you record stereo input into a single track? For example if I was to use a computer to record a drum track into a single track, and the drums on the computer were created in stereo, would the single track still be in stereo when I record it into the 4-track or would I have to use 2 seperate tracks to have a stereo drum sound?

if it's in one track it will be in mono - it will still come out of both speakers, but any panning, or stereo effects added when the drum track was created will be lost.
