i back up all my stuff on an external hard drive thats sitting on top of my computer. this is all well and good if a file gets corrupt or something, but it doesnt protect the files from a fire or burglary and so on. i could keep backups at other peoples houses and stuff, but i write so music id be going back and forth every day dropping off my backups

so i thought that maybe there is a place online where i could go and just dump off files and have them stored on some server somewhere just in case something goes awry

also, im curious how you all back up your files, and how paranoid are you about losing them?

just buy some online hosting... you can get a year of hosting for $50-$60 with unlimited* space and just upload away.

EDIT:

I have all my shit backed up on my file server at home which I have in RAID1 which I then backup to an external every few weeks. Plus all the files on my localmachines... So I have quite a bit of redundancy... finally.

I haven't backed up shit. Oh well, i like a fresh start every now and again....

this has happened to me at least 3 times in my life but I always end up finding old CD-R's. I recently sat down and checked out about 200-300 CD-R's I had stored away in boxes and found a lot of my old stuff. I didn't even remember making some of it so it was kid of fun.

All my old multitrack recordings are backed up with each individual wav file.

My newer sequenced music, I usually only keep the sequences, and save the final render/master as a wav. It's fun to listen to a sequenced track from over a year ago and remaster it to sound even better with new techniques, or to completely remix the entire track...

Though the multitrack stuff is the best to go through. I have at least 60 folders (each just labeled with the date of the recording) of me playing synth and making weird experimental noise music, and sometimes you can go through it and find really great stuff.

So yeah, I'm a huge fan of backing things up. I have most of my music up until October 14th 2008 fully backed up on at least 4 harddrives, 1 being external and the other 3 on 2 seperate computers, in 2 cities (Vancouver and Montreal) so even if one side of Canada is hit with a nuclear weapon or something I'll still have my files safe on the other side of the Continent... =D

But yeah, internet backups sound like an interesting route. I think it'd take too long though. I'm happy with 3 seperate backups (I have 2 external drives here), and if someone decides to break in and steal all 3 harddrives (doubt it), hopefully they'll at least find the music and release it on a piracy site lol.
