Recommended Posts

most programs come with the basics, like chorus compression etc. does anyone have any secret weapons that they recommend?

are there any good filter vsts? or do they only exist in samplers?

this one kicks ass, and it's free.. not so much an effect as a synthesizer that operates from the audio you feed into it. lots of great and weird fun anyway

elottronix is the best free tape delay.

Anything that will feedback into itself can create some great effects. This includes delays. Tremolo is underrated, if you ask me. Compressors are invaluable, too. Gaaaaah! Too many choices...

Alright. Here's my final List:

Delay

Compressor

Phase Vocoder

Reverb

This will totally peg me as an EKT n00b, but when Hrvatski says "He got Cubase VST with the Hyperprism mods" on the Vatstep remix of Kid 606, what exactly makes the hyperprism suite of plug-ins so special?

I looked Hyperprism up and it seems that it was a plug-in pack that was released in the late 90s. It offered 32 different effects for $350 dollars, which might appeal to those looking for an all-in-one effects package.

Huh. That's a lot of stuff for a lot of money. Seems like 10 years later, you'd probably be able to download plugs equally as good for free (legally) from various places. Anyway, cheers!

i'm sure vsts were much harder to find back then considering they were probably new tech then, so not lots around

I mean, check the free vst plugins list. Also add to that all of the free melda plugs are top quality, especially the compressor, which is extremely flexible and has a drawable response curve: http://www.meldaproduction.com/freevstplugins/ . They keep making new stuff, I think last time I checked there was not a waveshaper. So time to download that too....

well first of all they were the first software plugins that had anything remotely resembling these effects

-sonic decimation/bit crush

-frequency shifter

-upper order harmonic exciter

-bass harmonic exciter

for this alone i think its a very impressive suite. On top of the fact that it was the first time besides getting an eventide or other expensive processer to do these things, it also was the first plugin set with automation that i know of.

it had its own built in 'path' drawing automation system totally independent of whatever host it used.

I only really used the standalone version but fuck man if it wasnt for hyperprism i dont know if we'd have Toybear, DestroyFX, and Pluggo and the 2nd generation of electronic music (tigerbeat6, etc) would sound a whole lot different.

actually not the case, i still haven't found a plugin that even comes close to the power and quality of the Hyperprism Bass maximizer . The harmonic exciter also rivals almost any VST ive used that do a similar thing. Also keep in mind that not even Waves or TC electronics had their suites out yet at the time Hyperpsim was king. Hyperprism i think allowed a lot of people with not much money at the time like Kid 606 to make some bad ass dsp trickery.

for anyone who wants to still use hyperprism or just check it out, the Direct X suite crack thats floating around the internet is really unstable on any of the newer hosts. The only way ive been able to use it is with one of those Direct - X wrapper vsts in cubase.
