who wants a remix?

As an aspiring electronic super-star sellout what better way for me to boost my profile than to remix songs for madonna, beyonce, justin timberlake and the likes. uhhh, but they're not phoning so one of you guys'll do instead, plus it'll be a lot more interesting! i think i'm gonna do 3 but will do one from here and 2 from myspace folks probably to keep it varied. first to fire me a bag o' bits to greenbank@gmail.com gets a mix done. be aware that it may come out exceedingly 80sish! i can probably handle any format, i prefer .wavs and i prefer to hear the original track too.

oh, ok i'll do a mcgriff mix! take yer time sending bits cos i'm working on the chris moss one (well after some pub fun). i quite like the idea of working with your stuff cos its a lot further removed from my music than chris's.

(edit) - oh and telling me the notes for parts with chords (i can work out the monophonic bits nae bother) is quite handy too. the more info the better!

greenbank myspace has now finally accepted the upload of the chris moss remix. it's the 4th track on the list, lansdowne rd (greenbank mix). i think i made it downloadable too for once. i'm not doing any more mixes for a wee while until i become un-stuck on the beak one (which i thought would be easy, d'oh!). might have to start again.

ok! i finally got round to doing the boring wee fiddly bits and the fun mixing bits on the beak remix and it's done! available from http://www.myspace.com/greenbank.

directors commentary (or 'a boring production story by a bored and hungover pete'):

i was quite looking forward to this one: nice clean guitar parts, something i'd never worked with before, and a nice upbeat melody + skittery drums. i decided to try to aim for a bit of an open acoustic vibe to match the original + definitely wanted to wedge some synth in there somewhere.

all the beats got chopped and chucked in the tracker (modplug), the guitar parts all went in too. initially noting the resemblance of one of the drum sounds to that produced by the roland tr-606 i tried throwing some of that in and beefing up the existing drums with that. not quite liking what i heard i changed tack and threw in 'atlanta boogaloo' chunks, hand chopped and tweaked. i picked this break for its cheeky attitude and nice sound when pitched up by 12. the wonky fun-ness of these new beats was acceptable but a more solid base had to be found, layering up the 606 sounds with another break 'hey last minute' produced the desired results. some parts of the original drums were then mixed in slightly as well. several hits were sampled for every drum and then played randomly to produce a more realistic and open sound to complement that of the guitar. every drum hit was EQed to remove undesirables, zero-crossed, faded or volume enveloped, denoised, de-hummed or declicked when necessary. i also decreased the pitch + speed of the guitar parts (and the tempo of the track) by a couple of semitones to make the beats slightly less frantic on my version.

the melody part was simple - i just followed along the guitar parts with a synth patch (2 osc, ressy triangle wave thing i think it was, really clean and simple) (i had emerson lake and palmer at the back of my mind while doing this) and sometimes deviated to make extra harmonies. i got stuck around this point and couldn't progress for a while, it wasn't quite working, i needed more drive to it or a change partway or something. while trying playing guitar parts backwards to squeeze out some extra variations i tried the old reverse reverb type shenanigans (more involved than that, but basically thats what) and they sounded pretty cool if a little cliche. it added a nice twist to the tune so i went with that for the finale. the main structure of the song formed from roughly following that of the original but dropping my less successful variations and synth parts when necessary. i obviously veer off halfway but i do still keep following original melody parts, just accenting them differently and using a breakdown part from the original as a main part + melody in mine. everything was kept quite short and neat, not much extra crap in there - pop-style.

i left the track for ages after getting to a nearly finished point but then got back to it and just added lots more drum variations, fixed up transitions, changed the levels around and sorted the spacing out.

i ended up making the track slightly more studio-ey sounding than the intended close up, open and acousticy sound but it works well enough and it gets through the quality control.

useless facts:

35 channels

83 samples

79 patterns

filesize - 26344Kb

format - .it (modplug custom extensions)

other samples - tr-606, 'atlanta boogaloo', 'hey last minute'

134bpm

the end

PS - anyone else finish other mixes yet?

EDIT - myspace makes it sound squishy as hell, hopefully i will find somewhere better to put it...
