Whats the story with Warp and Richard?

Recommended Posts

I understand that Drukqs was some sort of contract breaker or something, but is there any articles on the specifics of this? Does anyone know exactly what happened behind the scenes?

don't know the real deal, but i'm sure it's as simple as that the original contract was for an x amount of albums, and after having made x albums richie didn't feel for a new contract and instead focussed on his own business (rephlex, men records etc). in other words - there's probably not a real story, but if anybody's got a better version with some extra drama, i'd like to hear that as well

Whoever scores the next interview with Richard better not be like those two fucking dimwits in Russia who asked Richard why he had long hair.

Boring serious answer for the n00bs.

Before 26 Mixes came out there were rumours on internet that it was the last album he was contracted to Warp for, and that there was no new contract. The lack of anything further on Warp seems to add a bit of weight to the rumours.

RDJ hasnt said anything because he's ooo mysterious guy.

Warp haven't said anything because he's easily their biggest selling artist and it wouldnt be a good look. They have even plugged the crap out of Analord and Tuss on Rephlex and put out the AFX / LFO split. Even if the split wasn't amicable, it's in Warp's interest to act like it was.

Rich had been saying for years that he wanted to stop releasing music and just make music for himself. Obviously, he's too much of an attention whore for that, but he's doing it on his own label now, on his own terms, not with deadlines and contracts and promotional commitments and shit.

The rumour that Warp has some kind of exclusivity on the name "Aphex Twin" has been around for years. Rich used the name on Rehplex to get attention for Analord 10, but he might have had to get permission from Warp as a one-off or something. I personally dont think there will ever be another (new) release under the name UNLESS there's like a compilation of new/obscure artists on Rephlex and it also has "first Aphex Twin track in x years" as a publicity gimmick.

So because he has no deadlines, do you think we will see fewer releases but perhaps with more content... i.e. Analord?

I fear because he has kids now, he just doesn't have the time anymore to dedicate himself to producing "albums" in the typical sense and will only rarely just release EP's or something.

btw... who the fuck is his wife? Karen Tregaskin?

I heard somewhere that as a recording artist you are able to make 'guest' appearances on other labels with your band/artist name for compilations and the like but there is a limit. I think it's 2 songs or it could even be percentage based like 15% of the total running time or something. I think Richard was exploiting (or flaunting) this loophole by appearing as Aphex Twin on the Analord series.

I very much doubt Richard wants to stop releasing music and just make it for himself as he could have done that long ago.

Someone told me that Richard was asked about the situation between Warp and himself in some interview and his answer was "you don't want to know".

Does anyone know if Warp is involved with Warner Bros?

sounds to me like the source of that is an interview where richard was asked about it. his response was something like, "you dont want to know man it's bad"

Everything Richard releases is published by Chrysalis. He still has a contract with them as far as I know. So no matter what label he's on.. It's still Chrysalis. These guys collect his royalties every time a track of his is used on a documentary/advert whatever.

Of the two founders of Warp, one sadly died a couple of years back. I get the feeling that he was the one that Richard got on with the best? Plus, check the quality of warp since then.

How many albums did he do with Warp? 5 full ones, a remix one, and a couple of EPs. A 5 album deal is fairly normal in the industry. If his contract is over with Warp, that would explain why he was able to use the Aphex Twin name for the Analord Series.

Rephlex is Richard's vanity label.. Pretty much no artists on it are profitable - except anything put out by Aphex. Hence, a flurry of small releases to boost the label's coffers to keep it running.

I would not expect another album out on Warp any time, ever.

I read that interview, the tone came across as sarcastic.

hasnt joyrex said that in no way warp "own" the aphex twin name = richie can do with it as he pleases?

also yea about one of the main WARP guys passing away, i think i remember reading an interview with aphex and he was saying stuff like how he knew everyone at warp, got on well with them, then that all changed or something

I thought Chrysalis was just Richard himself, or am I mistaken?

A publishing company handles your rights as a songwriter, paying you when music written by you is played on radio or tv, covered by someone else, or used in a movie, ad, game etc.

A record company looks after (and often owns) your recordings, paying you a cut of the sales.

They've always been two totally separate things in the music biz.
