anyone know of any good free sample sites?

For ripping music off video games, like YEK said, emulators!!! For NES, you can get "NSF" readers, and then "NSF" files of games, to get the music out of it.

In terms of samples, you never know if they're actually copyright free or not, since the people selling them may not even be legit. One that is definitely free, since the copyrights have expired, is the Cylinder Preservation Project.

Also, if you're getting more serious with your sampling, why not make your own samples? You can buy a nice mic for $60, and a Minidisc player/recorder for $20, so for under $100 you can record high quality samples by yourself, of anything you want.

I have these bookmarked but never end up using them

also try internet archive or ubuweb if you want to sample old movies/avante garde poetry readings

back in the day got a bunch of drum samples from an issue of future music

all I do for sampling is record with my cell phone or sample between different programs/hardware

Search for free soundfonts you'll get a ton, if you want more precise stuff just load the files in audacity or extract the audio with virtualdub.
