YEK
i remember back when i was reading i think probably em411.com and there was talk of an eq. this eq by the way it was being talked about was "magic" it added a sort of "air" to a channel, a "feel" i know it was hardware AND, it was very expensive. so i'm thinking, if such a thing exists, how hard would it be really to make a virtual one? Guest hahathhat
if your track needs more air just add beans to the mix. Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/41310-specific-eq/#findComment-912725 Share on other sites

Guest welcome to the machine
Yeah, there are already some great software EQ's like the SSL emulators etc and they do a good job. but if it was a simple as that to model a hardware unit then it would have happened a long time ago! new convolution eq's like the liquid mix etc take the tech a step in the right direction but they still fall way short of the real thing. thats why people still spend £3000 on an eq. we have a GML 8200 at work and it kicks ass, its an amazing bit of kit and just using it a tiny bit on the master bus just ties everything together amazingly. Plug ins are still a long way off being able to do that to that level of quality but you can still get great results. those mystical and expensive devices are more for the realm of recording bands and real instruments on a high budget where preservation of the natural sound of instruments is absolutely key, i wouldn't say its worth the money to buy one for an electronica type studio.. that said, I would love to bring the eq's at work back home... Guest sysex
This is probably one of the best EQ plug-ins I've used. http://www.sonyoxford.co.uk/pub/plugins-sony/products/eq.htm However, to address the OP's question: Shouldn't an EQ be transparent and not add "air" or a "feel" ?? Sounds kind of ambiguous. Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/41310-specific-eq/#findComment-914211 Share on other sites

However, to address the OP's question: Shouldn't an EQ be transparent and not add "air" or a "feel" ?? Sounds kind of ambiguous. The sonnox stuff is great but expensive! as for your point, no not necessarily, in fact most of the best eq's in the world add there own character to the sound, its that character, in part, that you are spending the money on! sometimes you can pass a sound through a great eq without much on the settings just to sweeten it up. This is normally only the case if you have some very good eq's to use. When you mention air, that normaly refers to the high highs of a sound, and as such an eq is often used to increase the 'air' in a sound, its an actual area to boost not an ambiguous descriptor.. feel is a bit ambiguous, but its difficult to describe what the really nice eq's and processors do beside what they are designed to. Even great engineers end up saying it just adds 'something'! a surgical eq is something that you want to be really transparent, often in a nice studio you will do a lot of small and tidy cuts and boosts in the box, and then use the nice hardware eq's for sweeping boosts and shelving etc to really get the sweetness out of them. Modern emulations like the waves ssl etc are trying to go some way towards achieving that sound from a plugin, and they sound good. The waves R eq's were trying to do a similar thing, whereas the waves QEQ's are meant to be super clean and surgical. it depends what you need! Guest Bad Influence
I've been using the CamelPhat for a while and there's a section on the panel called Magic Eq. Nice plugin but a little pricy. CamelAudio Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/41310-specific-eq/#findComment-915912 Share on other sites

chim
I love the ssl and vcomp from waves, they do things to sound like no plugin i've heard before. Try it on a heavy compressed drum sequence comprised of several breaks.
