when i press down on the record and there;'s a slipmat it doesn't seem to start quite so instantaneously as i thought it would when i take my finger off the record. is there ways to tweek it and give it more "friction"? does this even matter?

no. you need to adjust the torque of the motor. some technics have variable torque and you can adjust the start and the stop. go read about it online.

also, the center hole might be cut a little tight on some records. you can usually loosen them up (if you don't care about potentially fucking the record up and loosening the hole too much [causing skipping]) if you shove a pen in there and twist it a little bit.

if i leave my needle on the record and then switch the turntable on should there be a slight wind up sound or should (the music) start immediately>?

edit: yeah, fuck it, think I read this thread wrong, just go w/Perry's post

my first thought was actually gemini TT series tables. i have one, it has knobs for start/break speed adjustment...

and i believe almost any table will have a wind-up sound, but i'm no expert.

i think you're right. they are brandnew 1200's. i guess it's not even an issue. just that i don't really have any friends that have turntables or turntable experience so it's all new to me

it's physically impossible to start the record at full speed in zero time. you would need infinite acceleration, which would need infinite force from the motor. and you don't have such a motor.

ok, so you want to play word games.

think of it like this: if the torque of your motor is set properly, you can get the platter started without noticeable wind up. i have two technics 1200s, and the left one is a little slow to start and stop, so i adjust the torque on the motor. what im saying is, the torque varies slightly from unit to unit, and yek can change that if he so desires.

this thread? it's over.

well, i've never used, let alone owned a turntable, so i don't really know. i was just being a smartass.

  • 2 weeks later...

i'm being paranoid . yet another post about my turntable. i looked at the stylus and the needle while a record is playing and it almost looks like the stylus is touching the vinnyl... it's VERY low to the record. i'm using shure m44g's
