Decent FX for acid?

Anyone got any good tips on FX or bits of kit they use to get a dirty acid sound on a 303 or whatever?

Personally I'm finding guitar amp simulators quite effective especially tube style drives.

Overdrive it in a Mackie mixer. Then run that through an Alesis Quadraverb if you are feeling saucy.

Yeah the old standard seems to be the overdrive, i like using chorus's which kind of adds thoses extra timbres, another thing i like is record 2 seperate lines of the same sequence and then automate the cutoffs then pan one left and the other right.

Diao: funny you should mention overdriving the mixer channel as I was doing this before I borrowed my mates Line6 which can also filthy it up a treat.

whenever i use hardware, feedback tends to be involved.

i put my acid through a dynamic filter plugin and it sounds amazing

Yeah with alot of accent lines compression is somethin that gives it that real punch 'n' bounce, u hear that alot in viberts acid, u have to experiment with the release and attack but u'l know when uve got it right. i find it works better on clean signals tho because the distortion often rounds the edges of anyway.

I've used a bass limited pedal (normally used for slap style) which gives my Rev that punch and slight clipping at high accent levels the downside of which is that high resonance settings with high accent distorts the pedal in a really shitty way. I never thought of using a proper compressor as such.

I enjoy this subject for some reason.

I just tried some methods, i guess u dont really get any orignal sounding acid but get some pretty fat sound sounds. Here is alittle demo of some the ideas we've been saying:

These are techniques from start to finish

chorus

clean

compression

compression on seperate line pan left and right followed by the chorus line underneath

final bit is just a bit crusher which gives u that talking type sound.

It sounds okay after 0:06

i use a variety of Buzz effects on the 303 input from the tascam unit.

e.g. machines called "aDist", "Phatman chorus", "SVerb", "Unwieldy Delay", "Automaton Compressor", "Joachim's Limiter", and a 7 band EQ. There's also a kind of loopstation which can be used to layer several looping 303 samples.

Analogue fx rule though.. nonlinearity is what we are looking for.

i like to wear a trilby when i'm whackin out the 303 biz, summat aboot the 40s hatvibe that really rocks wi a roland

go figure

if no trilby, i imagine any hardware/software overdrive will do the trick

+ writing patterns that aren't shit of course

So I'm guessing software then like the Predatohm or something?

d16 devastor is good, pretty much designed to sound great with a 303

I don't have anything special to contribute here. Just want to say that this is a great thread and I will be trying some of these acid tips.
