IGNORED

ROYGBIV

Recommended Posts

I started to wonder why the song has that title. Then it occurred to me that if each track playing was assigned a color, you could have this song; the bassline at the beginning as Red, the flutey sample as Orange, the synth lead as Yellow, the piano as Green, the little boy as Blue, the drum track is split between the actual beat and a tambourine-like rhythm, so Indigo and Violet.

I always thought the song was a reference to Michael "Biv" Bivins of Bell Biv Devoe/New Edition fame.

Biv is in the orange construction helmet. Note the colors of all their helmets and I think you can agree I'm onto something here.

The color indigo is represented by their overalls.

Yeah, you're probably right.  It was probably a cosmic accident.  I bet they don't do anything on purpose.

No, they named it because they liked the anagram, etc. and also knew it would fuck with our heads trying to figure out what in the hell that voice is saying - I asked once, and was politely turned away.

I think it says "safe"

It always sounded like "faith" to me, but that's not important.

Anyway, it was one of those little pearls of an idea I thought I'd throw to the swine of watmm to watch them muddy it with their dismay.

LOL, seconded.

actually, this entire forum has pretty much made me hate boards of canada altogether.

that's quite random... though Roygbiv has never been amongst my favourite Boc tracks, I don't understand the intense fascination.. but I don't mind

I credit this forum for helping me realize that the giddy "OMG, BoC, 666 and shrooms and weed and all the emotions" is kind of retarded.

Oh, SHIT!

You mean to tell me those letters are an anagram for the visible spectrum of color?

Goddamn, I feel so stupid now!

I was being sarcastic.

Kings play chess on fine green sand, scared lovers try positions they can't handle, every good boy deserves fudge, the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog, etc.

roygbiv is the most perfect song ive ever heard... every time i listen to it i try to figure out how the hell did they manage to compose such a beautiful song.....

This is actually produced similarly to one of the live WARP 10th tracks--one track sampling. They lowered the frequency of an actual rainbow, through the microwave spectrum, and into the realm of the human-audible. This sample was reversed and echo was added. The "drums and synths and pianos" etc. are actully the harmonic sections we "see" in a rainbow, so, the fellow who had postulized that the different colors represented the different elements of the track is basically correct.

The "sample of the child saying something" was a bird or possibly a small aircraft flying through the air at the time of the rainbow's sampling, which according to the total tracktime, would be approximately 500-7000 hours in length depending on the height and circumfrance of the rainbow. Rainbows of course are round, and not bow shaped, and are not capable of producing sounds similar to stringed instruments with this technique, whish is why ROYGBIV does not have a violin sound, which one also might assume would appear in the violet spectrum.
