I know this has probably been talked about before...

Recommended Posts

I've been making music (if you can call my crap that) by way of computer for a good couple of years now, and been lurking on watmm for the past 7-8 months or so. I've seen a lot of threads wiht 'what should I get?!!' type posts, but all I've seen is a plethora of recommendations. I really would like to start moving from my computer to some hardware, but I really don't have the funds right now to get a large list of things.

Is there just ONE piece of hardware that I could use that would hold me over until I got enough cash to purchase other things (keyboard, controller of some sort)? I don't know all that much about hardware, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance guys

Well, mostly I would love to have a keyboard of some kind, that'd be what I'd work best with. But I suppose a midi controller would be fine. Any recommendations, links?

i'm sorry, but your question is vague beyond being answerable.

do you want a synth? do you want to use samples?

you can make loads of stuff with just one synth if you can record multiple tracks. you could get a synth and sync it via MIDI to your computer, then record different patterns into a multitrack recording program and cut and paste them over different tracks.

even if you just have like one cheap synth, you can make a whole track with it - drums, the lot. you can model kick drums from low frequency pulses, model snares from white noise, then lay some lead sounds over the top - just experiment! all you need is a USB - MIDI interface, a multitrack recording program and a MIDI compatible synth (ideally with an on board sequencer - if it doesn't have one, you will need to send sequences to it from a sequencing program).

anyway, the upshot of all this is that with a little creativity, a computer, a MIDI interface and one piece of hardware you can do quite a lot.

Yeah, I think I'm going to explore the MIDI route and see what comes up there, it seems I can do a lot from what you're saying. Thanks all for the help. :embrassed:
