Recommended Posts

i've heard of "flashing" cards before can i transfer the rom onto a gameboy cartridge and that is taht?

or do i have to buy something more like a psp or ds, mod/hack them with a gameboy emulator and load up the rom that way

I was gonna suggest getting an R4, but you mean for the original gameboy right ? In which case I'm all out of ideas.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I think Chaosmachine recommends the M3 - the R4 is very hard to come by these days, and I would avoid getting a DSi - apparently, they are harder to hack.

The PSP might be your best bet (no real 'hacking' required, just a special battery that puts it into service mode), and you can get a wide range of emulators for it, plus the increased screen resolution over the DS would benefit running 16-bit games and the like.

They do have PC/Mac emulators for Gameboy, Gameboy Colour and DS games

Yeah, that looks pretty good - my kids both have R4s for their DSes, but we only use it for DS games - make sure there's a GB or GBA emulator for the DS that can run on an M3 before making the purchase.

fuck, the compatibility bit for the psp is better in a way. also would end up around the same price if i buy a ds and then mod hardware

is it easy to hack a psp?

Like I said, all you need is a TOOL battery (Do a Google Search for PSP TOOL battery), and then a custom firmware (usually comes with the battery) - that site you were gonna get the M3 from seems a bit odd, since they don't sell any of the PSP batteries, but do sell a modchip, which I was unaware of...

The other nice thing about a PSP is it's a damn good portable movie player - get a 16GB Memory Stick Pro Duo 2, and you've got a shitload of games, movies and music at your fingertips. I take my PSP with me wherever I go.

I have the M3 for the DS, works great. There are emulators for almost every old system that run well.

Some examples: NesDS (for NES lol), Lameboy (for Gameboy/Gameboy Colour), and then JenesisDS does most Genesis games at full speed (including Sonic 2), the only bad thing about this is that the DS screen size is smaller than a TV, so some things have to be cropped (hardware scaling doesn't work on both horizontal and vertical). SnemulDS and SnesDS both do SNES well, but both have their strong points.

The PSP is harder to hack right now, especially with the newer models. They have a motherboard that has apparently not been hacked yet. But if you buy one used, it's rather simple (not as simple as on the DS) to run emulators.

Good luck.

I was going to suggest that you get a GP2X, which is an open-source linux based handheld console. It was pretty much designed to be the ideal emulator handheld, with tons of emu's and freeware programs written by the community. Plus, it plays AVIs with a built-in movie player (although a different program written by someone else works much better). I have the F200 design and love it.. mine has primarily been running a gameboy advanced emulator for a while, but I've also played NES, SNES, genesis, gameboy and atari games on it.

Unfortunately, the F200 has been out of production for a while. However, I just learned that there's a new model arriving soon: the "wiz" (North American distributor). Looks pretty sweet.. gonna have to order one! My wife can have my old one.. she's addicted to gameboy ;)

yeah i've heard about these and seen them in magazines. i'm not that dedicated to buy one i don' think

also, you're married? wtf

Don't get the M3, they don't update the firmware anymore, which is bad, for example chrono trigger will not work. If you use the hacked firmware for the R4 on the M3 it will work, but its just getting more and more hackish for the M3 users who want to play the latest games. There are other flashcarts that work better.

i've been told by multiple people now to get the cyclods

is that all i need, and i'm guessing that you insert a sd card into it and voila, yes?
