I am part of a dangerous experiment

Recommended Posts

Guest Mr Salads

It looks like we have set up a meth lab in the apartment. Frankly Im a little nervous. What are the potential outcomes of this experiment, other than just having really awesome tasting beer that we've bottled up? Isnt it possible to die from this if something goes terribly wrong?

Anyone with experiences would be welcome to post

Is the place well ventilated? Just buy two really cheap fans from the dollar store, put one blowing in in one window, and one blowing out in another. Keep tabs on all your flammable things. Also watch your hops levels!

I think the fumes as seriously hazardous as well, are they actually do this for real?

Yeah its pretty well ventilated. Im mostly worried about the carbonation. If he puts too much sugar in it we could have messy explosion.

my brother makes his own beer, but I don't know much about it. It mostly involves boiling things and letting them ferment, I suppose if something was fermenting in a sealed container it could explode? but I don't think there are any volatile chemical reactions going on, relatively speaking any ways.

a list of hazards I can think of with associated risk

1. risk of carbon monoxide poisoning if you're using combustion to heat the rig in an enclosed area--would be really low if ventilated anyway.

2. container explosion from gas pressure--low risk since it would likely blow up when you're not around and it would just be a mess.

3. if using gas to heat rig, terribly high gas bill for all the boiling necessary

4. possibility of accidentally creating methanol instead of ethanol but there are simple tests to determine that if you look up moonshining/brewing on the internet I bet.

All in all, I'd say have it at it. Don't blame me when it tastes like fucking shit though!

Creating methanol? So I take it that is toxic. Well, it smells pretty good so far. We are in the second stage of adding hops, with one more to go. Gas bill could be higher for sure since we are using our gas stove top.
