Bovril

at some point in my childhood i realised bovril was supposed to be a drink (there's steam on the label) and i've felt weird about it ever since, actually the last time i had bovril was about 15 years ago, when i tried it as a drink.

i actually had marmite on toast today and didn't really enjoy it.

but it's so long ago... can you describe what makes bovril better?

To me, its just got a slightly 'warmer' taste and is thicker...it's like the difference between butter and margerine (well, it's probably nothing like that, but that's the best I can do). And it's beefier, of course.

Its all a matter of personal preference, of course...

But if you think marmite is better, you're wrong.

So like you can spread this stuff on toast and what do you do for the drink, put a dollop in mug and pour over boiling water?

yeah, simple as that.

When I was very little, I thought you drank it straight from the jar...

That didn't work out too well...

rendering a cow into salty poo

lol

this is where it gets complicated...

they swapped it from beef to yeast extract for a while (it tasted pretty much the same though) in order to make it suitable for vegetarians. I think some people complained, and they started using beef again

the 'Bovrilgate' scandal was a dark time for Bovril-lovers...
