Using computer keyboard as midi keyboard

Recommended Posts

My buddy showed me ableton the other day and how there is a built in keyboard/midi keyboard function so you can play chords n stuff with your computer keyboard.

Is there a way to do this for reason? some sort of addon or other program?

I am getting a midi keyboard at the end of the month but i want to at least be able to play some stuff now

try

bome's mouse keyboard

it's quite a nice little virtual keyboard. it's always got to be on top of reason when you're using it, and when you go to turn a knob in reason, the midi 'note-off' doesn't happen, so the note sticks. but getting over the foibles, it's a cool way of doing what you ask, i reckons.

awesome... how come it doesnt work in recording mode though

erm not sure. i could always record using it.

i think you have to use a midi yoke to make it work ... maybe you've already got that.

as long as the bome keyboard is the last piece of software you click on before playing in with it, even after pressing record. I dunno, can't think of other reasons. (no pun)

i actually found another thing right after i posted this

i got maple virtual midi cable running with sweet little piano

Its working great but like i said record mode not working :S

I use Virtual Midi Keyboard, with that MIDI Yoke software.

It does the job, but I can't press a certain amount of keys at once, so it's still a bit useless

btw: record's working flawlessly over here as far as I know

lol i keep solving the problem on my own and not updating you guys on here.

It turns out i'm just retarded and i didnt have the midi port routed properly

One thing tho, for some reason , certain specific key combinations don't work. There does not seem to be any pattern here, just some work and sometimes you can't add certain keys to chords

I think I have the same problem, is there a beep coming from your PC speaker when you're trying this?

it's not a software problem, it's a 'problem' with your keyboard. it's to do with how the controller processes keystrokes, hence certain combinations not working while others do.

i'm not sure if there is a keyboard that allows all of the keys to be pressed at once. i haven't tried many, but i've run into that problem with all of the keyboards i've used.

i know what your saying but the strange thing is that its not like obscure chords that won't work its like... random 2-3 key chords.

I was under the impression that a 3 key chord should register no matter WHICH 3 keys you were playing

it's not strange, it's supposed to be like that, keyboards aren't designed to be used as music keyboards.

some types of keyboard circuitry will register a maximum number of keys at one time. This is undesirable for games (designed for multiple keypresses, e.g. casting a spell while holding down keys to run) and undesirable for extremely fast typing (hitting new keys before the fingers can release previous keys). A common side effect of this shortcoming is called "phantom key blocking": on some keyboards, pressing three keys simultaneously sometimes resulted in a 4th keypress being registered. Modern keyboards prevent this from happening by blocking the 3rd key in certain key combinations, but while this prevents phantom input, it also means that when two keys are depressed simultaneously, many of the other keys on the keyboard will not respond until one of the two depressed keys is lifted. With better keyboards designs, this seldom happens in office programs, but it remains a problem in games even on expensive keyboards, due to wildly different and/or configurable key/command layouts in different games.

I've found no decent solution to this

you can do it in ableton and renoise

Does Ableton need to be the frontmost app?
