But Autotune does use a vocoder.

no, it doesn't...

it's a realtime granular pitch adjustment

a vocoder splits an incoming signal (saaaay a voice..) into volumes across a set amount of frequency bands then applies those band specific volumes to a secondary input/built in synthesizer

autotune simply re-pitches incoming audio, granularly

pitchfork gave darkstars "need you" the "best dubstep single" award last year

i'd say vocoders are a go

autotune is hated on....for now...people also hated flangers when they came out

give it time

i quite like the sound of autotune when it's used as an effect, but i've only heard it used a few times the way i like it, eg. skinny puppy's album 'the greater wrong of the right' is a good use of autotune.

as for vocoders, in my opinion they were never uncool.

i love the sound of autotune

especially running things other than voices through it

giving musical qualities to "unmusical" sounds

and it's all over that burial untrue album...just used very tastefully..."flipped proper" as it were

i was just kinda sayin it's kind of a fear of new technology thing

grog no like autotune

grog prefer rock and stick

also autotune, probably the first example of extreme overuse as an effect in popular music

Guest Synthacat 9

everything should be used in moderation

and as pointed out in this thread, autotune usually isn't nowadays

so if you're going to use a vocoder, don't think its going to make every track perfect and therefore overuse it on every track; don't let it become a gimmick

Personally, I LOVE vocoder. It can sometimes make a shit track much better. I remember my first listen of vocoder... herbie hancock... i forget the song name... Brilliant... Ed DMX knows how to use it better than most of his peers also.

i wouldn't consider distorted guitar to be an overused effect, it's just a tone really. but i freakin' love distorted guitar, so i'm a bit biased.
