Guest jim
Not exactly underappreciated but i dunno how many of you have heard his stuff so heres a couple of youtube clips, amazingly gifted composer asyla 3rd movt (surprisingly not very well played by berlin phil) piano quintet aria from his opera based on shakespeare's tempest, absolutely mindblowing- the voice is so high that you really need the subtitles to actually recognise the words. Dementia
Interesting, but terribly stark. I've never been one for anything resembling the Second Viennese School save for Shostakovich's use of atonality. I might try to find The Tempest, have you heard it entirely? Guest jim
yeah i saw it at the premiere in 2004, i don't think it's been recorded though. Living toys and arcadia are both worth a listen. Odd you should say that, he's pretty tonal as modern composers go... Guest adorno1982
Great topic! Ades is the Mahler of our time! he synthesises wonderful elements of Jancek, Mahler, Britten, Ligeti perhaps into his very distinct and unique language. I would venture that doesn't have a lot in common with second viennese school composers, certainly not his most recent music. My favourites are the indescribably beautiful and epic 'Tevot' and the brilliant 'In seven days' for piano, orchestra and moving image - visuals done by Tal Rosner. Here is the tiniest of tantalising clips - check this out, this is a kind of musical heaven for me. Hah, I suppose that I'll delve a bit further into Ades' works. I must admit that I'm not so familiar with contemporary artists (c. 1970—present day). However, I will say that I was excited to discover Kevin Puts after happening upon some symphony of his by chance, traveling through Northern Wisconsin. I can't believe that I've forgotten about him all this time, thank you. Guest Wall Bird
I've only watched the first video, but I must say that this is exactly what I want to hear in music. I will go check this out as soon as I am able. Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/44095-thomas-ades/#findComment-997719 Share on other sites
