A big Photoshop Favour

I use Adium. Upon browsing the Adium Xtras website i stumbled upon a Adobe CS4 dock icon for Adium, which got me thinking how cool it would be if I could do all my dock icons as different coloured CS4 with the correct two-letter text in them. Now I'm alright on Photoshop so I set about sorting it out and got this far:

As you can see the ones I created (MR, Fx, DU, Sw etc) dont have that deep rich shine the real ones do (Ai, Ps, and the Adium one which is user created) and I need that recreating. They've also got a slight transparency on the text, which is another must. I've got a zip of the original .psd that the guy who made the adium one sent me, and the colour is just a matter of altering the hue/saturation, but I can't work out how to change the text and keep the transparency.

Zip file is here, but you're gonna need CS4 to open it.

Any help would be awesome.

Also, it looks like there's some inner drop shadow blending effect on the font...

theres all manner of effects applied to all the layers. impakt, the text is no longer a text layer, its a shape. i can turn off the layer, leaving just the background, and i would just retype the text (the fonbt is widely available) but i just need to know how to make the text transparent, through the BG as well.

what have you changed? looks the same to me. i could do with just being told how to type text, then make it transparent all the way through the BG

Ah, right. Now I see the transparency you talk about. This is probably done with alpha-blending. Duplicate the text and make it an alpha layer?

i just spent ages gaying it up with one of those gay glitter app things then couldn't link it cos it was so gay.

believe me you would have loved it though.

I didn't notice it at first, but you can see the background through the letters on the Ai button.

Ah - there we go. Yeah, try making an Alpha Layer like Impakt said. I'm at a lecture right now, so I can't fiddle around with PS at the moment

how do you make a layer into an alpha layer?

squee im not sure youre getting me. i want to type new text and have it transparent with all the same layer effects applied. that one seems the same as the one before, what did you change?
