virus scanners aren't making up their mind here

So somehow a computer game appeared on a CD magically in my DVD drive. I'm not good with computers, I don't know how this game got there.

That said, my Avira virus scanner went apeshit on the setup.exe file, which fortunately I hadn't executed yet.

But it turns out most scanners say "no". Only about 17% of them think there's a problem:

Is this likely a false positive?

Now that Centurix doesn't come here anymore (yeah, where'd he go by the way??), which WATMMer shall I count on to pester about this sort of stuff?

Thing is this file has been out since 2007; I would think if there is malware or a trojan in here, wouldn't it be categorized by now and recognized by ALL the scanners here in 2009?

Or is there another explanation?

Do you know what game it's supposed to be?

Dungeon Keeper 2 :3

I've got quite experienced with computers and the three majors OS (win, lin mac) along the years, and there is one thing i can say. Not matter how paranoid and careful you get, windows will always get more and more malwares until the system turns unusable. Hence your problem is "natural"/

What do you mean ? (1)You were drunk and some mate pull a game into your CD drive ? (2)Or is it just a regular cd that miraculously becomes a game when mounted ?

First case : i would say don't worry, game makers don't put viruses into their products. However it might be a spyware.

Second case : some virus is playing with you.

But i'm not an expert at all, you should ask your question on a specialized forum/

I decided not to risk it. I'm going to buy it from Amazon, even though Bullfrog doesn't exist anymore and won't be getting my money and it'll just go to those fuckers at EA, but whatever.

And if Avira gives me a definite alse positive on the setup.exe from the actual manufacturer-released CD, I'm open to recommendations in advance for a better antivirus.

I used to have AVG 7.5 and it served me well, but lost it when I swapped hardware (despite being free it insisted it wasn't 'licensed' for the new computer setup, and then only the fat, bloated, big mistake AVG 8.0 was available on AVG's website -- 7.5 is no longer an option)
