Are Onion Rings Magical?

This has been on my mind for a while now and its getting quite frustrating.

Why are onion rings treated like some kind of special rare commodity?

On the menu they're usually a little pricey for a slice of onion deep fried.

In restaurants I often hear people browsing the menu and saying "oooh they have onion rings"

Fast food places like mcdonalds put them on the menu occasionally as a special limited time only thing and even then they're rationed out in such small portions you would think there was a world shortage of onions.

Yet I can go to asda and buy a frozen bag of 50 or more for about a quid. Even fresh onions are among the cheapest of vegetables and you get tons of them in a standard packaged bag. A single large onion must make quite a few rings. I don't understand this.

its not so much that theyre rare. its the prices and portion sizes that arent relative to ingredients or cooking time and effort. but they can also be pretty hard to get in so many places that you would expect to include them on the menu as standard

i checked with iris, because she was talking about onion rings a while ago. sent her a link to this thread.

she said "well all i can say here theyre pretty rare and i love them because i love onions and i love deep fried stuff. onions ftw <3"

by the way, i was thinking that too. it's just onions.. they're usually slightly more expensive than they should be.

they are probably expensive because they take fucking forever to prepare.

I remember seeing some dude doing it in the back of an A&W and I asked them what the hell was going on back there and the guy told me he was perparing the onion rings. Each individual ring needs to be prepared first by cutting, breading, and portioning, and they also have to check to make sure they are full rings or else they won't work out properly.

thats probably why its so much more expensive than fries which come in a huge bag precut and frozen

in my experience of slicing onions, i've been able to seperate rings very quickly and easily

they are pretty common around here, but surprisingly hard to find a place that actually does them right.

i guess it depends on the staff. TGIFridays gave me my worst onion ring experience ever. they were soggy, bread falling right off the onion. garbage. Sonic gave me my most recent pleasing onion ring experience.

My friend Dicky and I have a system, we go to Wetherspoons and then order a large bowl of onion rings and a garlic ciabatta bread to share. That's our system.

back on topic, onion rings are one of the biggest rip offs in the world of food for the exact reasons outlined in the original post. usually the onion deteriorates to such a point that its indeterminable what is onion and what is batter. the batter is always a bit soggy and limp, and when you do get a decent bit of onion it often comes out in one go leaving you with an empty half ring of soggy batter.
