all the MIDI data is generated by an app i've been writing. user selects a math function, pitch of notes (or cc values) are sampled from the curve it generates, each time a note plays it triggers a subsequence, etc. I think I found a nice balance between pure math and user manipulation...

haven't implemented a note scaler yet... would be nice to have all the notes in key. but i think it sounds pretty cool for now.

i don't think i could do something like this. I'd feel like I was cheating or something. I mean, how do you put heart & soul into generative music? I don't think you can.

It sounds cool, but i dunno.

i spent 3 months writing this program to achieve the sound i wanted. i think that probably takes some heart. setting all the parameters just right, creating synth patches that complement the MIDI patterns that emerge... figuring out which patterns should be notes and which ones should be cc's.

Are you just worried that you would feel like you were cheating, or does the music sound too cold to you?

As far as writing the program goes, ace job. Lord knows that takes heart. I know I couldn't do it.

As far as your question, both, definitely. Different strokes for different folks though, ya know? I'm not knocking it by any means. Just not my cup of tea in the sense that it isn't the particular alley I would walk down when composing. Maybe i'll feel differently in the future. There is no telling. At any rate, nice work.

yes you can actually very much especially if you are the one who generated the generative program :)

That's kind of the argument that was used against samplers and synths in the 80's and 90's. Where do you draw the line? They're all tools to create your product one way or another.
