I don't know if you're looking for a serious answer or not, but it's probably to do with the fact that they have one of the lowest birth-rates in the world, along with one of the longest life-expectencies. They're so into robots/droids because they need to figure who the fuck is going to do all the work when they're all too old and infirm to walk to the grocery store.

I really hope that androids arent that popular once robot intelligences become commonplace. I want my robot to look like a robot because thats what it is. There would be much more room for awesome robot designs. Whats the fun of dressing up robots to look like us besides weird sexual pleasure? You'd have to be really weird to think you're fooling anyone by dressing up a monkey to look exactly like a human being.
