the dew pond & the newt

the theater of the arts was closed so i lit a cigarette and walked along the boulevard hoping to accumulate the gazes of various lecherous women. my pants fit very well so i did not think this would be expecting too much. i lit a cigarette. just then i saw an old friend and approached him, he asked me for a cigarette and recognized me and i gave him a cigarette and lit it. we talked and looked at (into?) the moon, smoking, and he ate a snack he got at the carnival. i thought i too would like such a treat so we walked together to the carnival and this is where i caught the most glances and felt very confident and even inflated and arrogant (i could have crushed some one just then, another male challenger for instance) and i purchased what i had come for. the ferris wheel obscured the moon but we looked that way nevertheless and we barely spoke (what did we have to talk about anyway?). eventually he had to get back (to what? his wife? mistress? family? studies? job?) and we parted and i gave him a smoke for the road. i watched him as he left, going into rather than out of the fair grounds and eventually i saw him climb a couple small steps into one of the tents. i don't know why but i followed him in, but was sure not to be seen. the tent was some sort of carnival grotesquery and i saw horrors and freaks and surprises and fun. but i didn't see my friend. it occurred to me that he might be hiding from me in there so i increased my fortitude and climbed over the rail into the mechanisms and behind the curtains and into the labyrinths. still, i did not find him. i called his phone hoping i could hear it ring but it didn't and he didn't answer. in fact, no one answered! but i wasn't about to give up and i literally unscrewed the machinery and removed gears, parts, ribbons and other things until i could fit myself into the machine (b/c, maybe he was hiding in here) and i closed the metal plate behind me, screwing it tight from the inside so that no one could unscrew it from the outside and get me. i had to keep dismantling the machine in order to make my way through it. soon the ride had ceased functioning, the lights went out, there were sheets of smoke flowing through the tent, and i was surrounded by parts and gears and mechanisms all around me, on the floor, on ledges, on themselves and each other, screws and bolts rolling and rattling at my feet. still i did not see any sign of my friend. in an absurd moment i found myself still vaguely conscious of my pants, were they still looking good? (as though i could be seen in this mess, even if some one was looking for me!) at this point sparks began to rain down on me after i cut a few wires and removed a big circuit board, squeezing myself into the small compartment in its stead. this was altogether too small for any sustained waiting and i could go no further b/c i had reached the end of the machinery and was up against the outer walls of steel. but i could not get back either since before me was a vast mountainous landscape of parts, bits, bites, circuits, layouts, plans, screws, nails, plates, copper, elements, liquids, acids, batteries, smoke, filters, oils and greases, threads, fibers, optics, coils, springs, with sparks shimmering and scattering above and about it all. you know, to be honest, i might have started to panic (well, might have even panicked out right) considering my state, folded up in this little crevice surrounded by impenetrable manufacturings. just then, however, my friend appeared! miracle of miracles he walked right through the rubble, grabbed me by the elbow (which, i admit, must have been easy enough seeing as i had at this point become entirely folded upon myself so that i was no more than the size of a briefcase) and, by pushing with his finger a certain spot on the vast metallic walls, a door opened up and he carried me out and tossed me to the side. while i unfolded myself with great difficulty over the coarse of about twenty minutes or so i watched (when i could position myself so as to see!) my friend swiftly -- and with so much ease that at times he appeared to be, perhaps even was, asleep! -- repair the machinery, gathering up all the screws and bolts and plates and without a single tool putting everything back in its right place and securing the whole apparatus as he must have done thousands of times before. when he was finished (which was accomplished just as i finally stood up and got myself together -- yes, my pants still looked good, a genuine relief!) there was absolutely no sign of there having been any alteration in the gears, systems, the whole thing looked just as it had when i first saw it. the ride was up and running again and i heard screams and laughter and i was utterly amazed at this experience. i asked my friend to come out and have another smoke and we stood in the darkness, the glow of the moon and the carnival not penetrating this spot of night shade behind the tent. i told him i was looking for him, that's why i had got into the remarkable situation in which he found me. i didn't know if i should apologize and before i could make up my mind he said he had to get back and slipped under the canvas flaps into the carnival tent. for a moment i contemplated following after him but instead i lit another smoke and walked back to the boulevard hoping to test my new pants again.
