Question for the tech heads.

Basically I have been comissioned to do the artwork for an online album release for the last quarter of 2009. Earlier on today I installed a new epsom printer, and when the window for the installer loaded it had a background image on the finder window with the icons floating over it. I have also seen this on the firefox installer as well as numerous others. For the release I thought it might make a nice change to the monotonous downloading process if it was a more visually exciting with a background image and a pdf of images to accompany the music.

Does anyone know how you make/format that backgound image?

Any help would be appreciated.
