Dove "Real Beauty" Campaign

Recommended Posts

I realize this is a bit jazz, but I saw one of these adds again today for the first time in a while and damn do I find these women attractive. It's a cool thing that they're doing and it would be nice if the idea took off. But, as for my perverted self, i just want to bone these not-boney models.

Not a fan of the granny panties, but some of those girls are quite attractive.

Met a friend's mom last night. Total MILF. In her 50's and I would still hit it, even though that statement kind of makes me want to puke in my mouth a little.

For starters, all of those photos are airbrushed..

it's ridiculous the way they're claiming to be the saviours of women..

you should see what it looks like in a girl mag, one page it's "feel beautiful with dove", next page is "BE beautiful with maybelline" or some shit.

Much like max factor capitalizes on the idea that you should get bigger eyelashes, Dove is capitalizing on this idea, although they're hijacking the whole basis of self esteem or whatever the hell it is they're trying to associate their product with. Self esteem doesn't come with a bottle of skin cream.

And what about the girls who are too ugly to be in a dove ad?

In the end, this is the work of an ad agency, not some rag-tag group of dove employees who decided to go against the mold.

I guess I like it because it displays what a fucking circus this industry is.

i think the point has sailed clear over your head.

i'll take you at your word that they're airbrushed because it doesn't matter. the point is that women of different sizes, shapes and ages can be beautiful. that's the message that comes across. why would a company skin care company show somebody with bad skin or cellulite? they're still trying to sell something, after all.

No, the message is that women of different sizes, shapes and ages who buy dove can be beautiful. Dove isn't doing us a service. Just another way of creating an association with a brand name.

which is what makes them hypocrites and the whole thing a parody

you should feel better about yourself, you're worth it. here, buy this, it'll make you feel better. let's all go to a brighter future together.

my sales experience has taught me that it's the easiest way to sell something. exclude your motives out of the picture and feed the speculant ideas that they're doing for themselves. Everybody wants to feel happy and valuable. I just don't think there needs to be a industrial trademark involved.

it seems like you have a problem with advertising in general, not with dove. because all advertising tries to create an association with a brand name.

dove is doing what all advertising does. there's just one major difference - they're doing it with people that don't fit the image that is almost universally portrayed as representing beauty.

that's it. it's still an ad. they're still trying to get you to buy a product. they're just not accepting the standard definition of beauty while doing it. if that's not enough for you, you should whole up in a closet somewhere free from the advertising world. but if you live in a world where you're bombarded with ads, like i do, it's nice to see a company play with the rules while trying to get me to buy their crap.

The campaign is good in that it's pushing the advertising realm toward using "real" women in their ads, but it doesn't change the fact that they're belaboring a gimmick to promote a product which is pretty much irrelevant to the popular conventions of beauty they're supposed to be contesting. The campaign is there to enhance Dove's image instead of extolling the qualities of their soap, all cloak and dagger-like.
