Anyone making glitch-hoppy beats?

Recommended Posts

What's your tools? techniques? plug-ins?

I don't do much of this kind of stuff, but when I do, it seems to be all about classic breaks and lots of processing of individual hits...?

Am I on the right tracks?

Chopping up really wet sounds (like a ___ with a ton of reverb on it) can sound great in a glitched out sort of way. Taking any sound and cutting it abruptly will make a nice glitch effect, or segmenting it and pitch shifting different parts, or time stretching it. Gotta have lots of compression to get it satisfyingly crackly.

Yeah, chopping things up and processing them tons pretty much covers it. There's a million ways to do it, but it's all to the same end.

the way me and EDit do it is i believe the best way to do it (if you're going for a head nod feel and not a breakcore glitch cerebral feel). slice, program by hand, then edit and rearrange completely by hand.

take a break, but not a wel known one (no think, no amens, no funky drummers, no apaches) you want something slow and warm and a bit obsucre like The Meters

throw it in ReCycle if you like, but sometimes that can be self defeating, it very much depends on the complexity of the break; if theres a hi hat or 'ghost' snare or whatever right after a kick or something leave it, then program around it, which would mean making hte speed of yr song hte same speed of the beat.

then you can speed it up a litle if you'd lke to amke it sound a bit more in yr face but usually thats abad idea. however just pitchshifting the beats up a smidgeon sometimes makes it kick nicer.

no EQing, or at least not much. filtering!!! compression is good but dont compress out your snare rushes,

the biggest piece of advice i can give is program by hand. you dont need an MPC, just a little keyboard. you can't paint in drums for a hip hop glitch song..........unless you're Orange Dust

How electronic music?

more like the downbeat, glitch-hop stuff that's coming out of japan...

really like the beats on that intro track on Skam's listen section http://www.skam.co.uk/skw001/index.htm

(top right square of light)

I think Autechre/Gescom have always done these beats the best.

Sort of kept the vibe of a downtempo break, but managed to get it really processed sounding along the way somehow!?!

nah, never heard it. did that in audition. i guess that's equally as bad? =\

i suck at making music.

don't worry about it. when i made the fake autechre album i seriously had a 2 day long argument with someone on the That Other Site™ forum under a pseudonym trying to convince them that the fake autechre album used zero Bufferoverride (another made fun of effect). Even though i personally made the music, they would not believe that i didn't use it. I find it funny when people are so sure they recognize effects.

yeah i heard the supatrigga samples, and it does sound identical to what i did. :\

guess i'll have to start doing something different.

someone on here was 100% convinced that some sample+hold modulation thing was bufferoveride

Ultravisitor sounds like it has a lot of buffer override. I don't know if he really used it or not, but it's annoying as FUCK. I like the album, but I can't stand those sounds.
