I've been looking at Creative Commons for a while and wondered whether anyone here has put any thought into (or actually used) Creative Commons licenses with their music? - the main idea being encourage people to mash up / remix your stuff and perhaps encourage internet collaborations...

If you don't know what Creative Commons is, it's like copyright, but instead of being "All Rights Reserved" it's "Some Rights Reserved" so usually the deal is (depending on which license of theirs you use) people can do what they want with your work, as long as they make it clear that they've used your work.

Their website: http://creativecommons.org/

There are also options allowing or preventing use of your stuff for commercial use (i.e. you might set it up so they have to get in contact if they want to release something based on your work so you don't get ripped off).

And there's ccMixter too which offers samples and a capellas under Creative Commons licenses:

The guy who started it used to work for a copyrights company or something like that and got sick of it and started creative commons, it's a pretty good cause. A majority of net labels I've seen use it. Though I personally didn't because I felt it unnecessary.
