Woman Claims Father Was Infamous Zodiac Killer

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ―

San Francisco police were looking into a woman's claim Wednesday that her late father was the infamous Zodiac killer who terrorized the Bay Area in the 1960s and 1970s.

Homicide investigators were checking information provided by 47-year-old Deborah Perez, who said that as a young girl that she helped her father write and mail some of the letters that earned him the sensational nickname, SFPD Sgt. Lyn Tomioka said.

Perez of Corona, in Orange County, told reporters that she was a little girl when her father killed at least two of the known victims nearly 40 years ago.

Perez said that she was seven years old and was with her father, Guy Ward Hendrickson, when he killed Darlene Ferrin at a park in Vallejo and cab driver Paul Stine in San Francisco in 1969.

Perez said she has given police what she believes were the eyeglasses Stine wore and letters she wrote on her father's behalf about the crimes.

She said her father took the glasses off of Stine's face and she kept them all these years and only recently realized they belonged to a murder victim and not her father.

Perez said she saw a composite sketch of the Zodiac killer in August 2007 and recognized the man as her father, who died in 1983. She said she had never heard of the Zodiac killer prior to seeing the composite sketch.

The Zodiac killer is believed to have murdered at least five people and possibly as many as 36. He sent letters to local newspapers including The San Francisco Chronicle and The San Francisco Examiner that were splashed across the front pages, taunting reporters, police and the public with codes and clues to find his identity.

Nevertheless, his true identity has never been confirmed by police.

Kevin McLean, also in attendance at the Perez news conference, said he worked with attorney Melvin Belli who the Zodiac killer contacted pleading for help. McLean, acting as Perez's spokesperson, said handwriting tests show Perez did write some of the letters, and they hope DNA testing can be done on the glasses believed to belong to Stine.

Sgt. Tomioka said while detectives continued to follow leads and treat all claims equally, she emphasized that there was only one known murder that took place in San Francisco linked to the Zodiac.

McLean said Perez decided to reveal her father's identity in response to a Sacramento man who had claimed a relative of his was the Zodiac killer.

last year some kid said his step dad was the zodiac killer and among his step dad's shit he found a bloody knife and the weird hoodie thing that zodiac wore when he stabbed that couple at the reservoir. apparently dads are popular candidates for the zodiac killer.

I thought some guy admitted to being the Zodiac, and said his last letter (the long one that nobody figured out) was just snickerlish.

dude cmon, let me at least discuss a movie without being identified as "ET is saying something". i genuinly liked that scene, has nothing to do with anything else

i think im snapping...and by snapping i mean the big snap...you know, the one where you actually crack open and explode

even my saying this is an inevitable seeming of "attention or trolling". i choose to ignore such posts from now on...and my replies to such ideas were a fault of my own. starting.....................now!

how can anyone prove that the zodiac killer has died if they dont even know who it was?

Yeah actually he's in the news again, Mr. Kaufman(sp?) has found actual snuff photos too. They are gruesome pictures of a female with body parts cut up and a strangled boy. His dad definitely was a serial killer and could be zodiac killer.

Ehm... if she helped her father write the Zodiac letters why didn't she think about the fact that he had made her write stuff like: "School children make nice targets, I think I shall wipe out a school bus some morning. Just shoot out the front tire + then pick off the kiddies as they come bouncing out."? I know that she was only a kid at the time, but if my father had forced me to write this kind of fucked up stuff I would probably remember it.

Also, it doesn't make any sense, because didn't Robert 'Bob' Hall Starr/Arthur Leigh Allen send his brother a Christmas letter where he wrote "Christmass" just like in the letters to Melvin Mouron Belli? Would he have made his daughter write the Christmas cards as well?

ya i like the scene near the end where the journalist came into the store and just looks at the zodiac killer for a bit then walks out. quite awesome

Yeah, and as much as I liked Zodiac (I thought it was brilliant), Fincher basically sold us Graysmith's version of the story, that the Zodiac Killer was Arthur Leigh Allen. That last scene in particular leaves a pointed finger at Allen.

If anything from this woman's story is verified, it will completely shoot holes in Graysmith's book and consequently Fincher's film.

Well, it was one man's interpretation. I feel like the whole point of the story was the obsession and frustration of not knowing. Whether it was right or wrong doesn't make it any less of a compelling story.

i've been interested in this case for a really long time and was excited by the news yesterday, but of course, it turned out to be pretty sketchy. i'm not sure i really believe this chick...there were a lot of weird things about the zodiac case and her claims don't really address any of them.

but i was reading about the other dude, dennis kaufman, who believes that his step-father was the zodiac (that's the dude that found the snuff pics, the mask, the diagrams, etc.). not sure if i believe him either, but he's got a lot more evidence. it's clear that his step dad was definitely a serial killer, even if he wasn't the zodiac. check through his site:

lots of circumstantial evidence and he claims to have pieced together some of the stranger aspects like the mt. diablo radians and whatnot. he even called up his step dad before he died and tries to get him to come clean. the transcripts are down near the bottom of the page. there are also audio files, but they're kinda janky. not sure how i feel about it. he doesn't deny anything and he seems to reference stuff in vague ways, but i don't know if that's really proof. still, interesting read. if anything, i'd believe this guy over the chick. her story seems too fishy to me.

The handwriting is very similar to the Zodiac's... scary.
