Soundcard vs Laptop

Hey there, I use a 2 year old macbook (2 GHz intel core duo; 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) and a EM-U 0202 external sound card to record electric guitar using Logic. Whenever i record audio, there is a lag. it kind of fluctuates sometimes its almost unnoticeable and sometimes its very much there. I am considering getting an Apogee Duet in the near future to get over this annoying problem. Do you think buying a new soundcard will fix this problem or do I need to get a new laptop?

Thanks

narrow down the possibilities of what's wrong

try recording audio line in with the built in laptop soundcard

see if it has the same lag, if not the emu soundcard is the problem

Do Macs have different driver type modes like ASIO, DirectX, and MME like you get on the PC ?

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.
