vst effects freeware vs. paid

Recommended Posts

I know some vst effects are freeware which puts their quality into question but what freeware vsts are out there that ppl consider just as good if not better than ones you pay for in terms of efficient use of resources. Also what are some of the worst offenders in terms of ones you would pay for then perform or sound like shit.

I read a very thorough discussion about this on a swedish forum a while ago. They said that they were more or less exactly the same. the really expensive ones (waves etc) might use slightly better algorithms etc, but I think they just look fancier.

some of the freeware plugins I've used caused a lot of CPU load or just made my DAW crash (that is Asynth and another VST that emulates plucked strings or something, it was mentioned on WATMM somewhere)

i use a lot of free plugins, mostly the stuff that comes with reaper, like the eq, comp, and guitar effects in jesusonic (amp modelling, tremolo and pitch shift mostly), but also stuff like smartelectronix ambience, mda leslie, mda epiano, tapeworm, cvpiano, usually the stuff with minimal interfaces.

i don't use much in the way of commercial plugins, but the few that i use, i tend to use the fuck out of. ezdrummer and edirol hq orchestral in particular are my favourite commercial plugins.

basically, i'll only go for something commercial if i can't find a free version - hence why i still use reaper, though i'm tempted to pay for it just because i like the program.
